Hello all

I am looking for feedback on a Yanmar FX42D tractor for $8500 from Free-Tractor-Manuals.Com. Pictures look great. I will be adding a hoe and a FEL from the same source. I am wondering about parts availability and reliability? What is the best way is to judge tractor health during a test drive in a parking lot? They are offering a 90 day warranty. I am torn between something like a Kioti CK30HST with financing and warranty or Yanmar with more power and lower initial cost. I am wondering if it is likely the Yanmar’s cost of ownership is likely to equal the Kioti’s say 5 years down the road? Does anyone know if there is a JD model tractor that approximates this Yanmar?

Thank you

Since he is a broker who is the dealer that will service this tractor? The price is low for that size tractor that is why I ask.

What I look for on FX models (cant speak for FX42 in 7 years I have never seen one). Shuttle should shift strong with only minor hesitation. Grab the top of the front tires push pull from the side. Should not be sloppy, leaking doesn’t bother me but bad bearings do. No excessive pressure out of the crankcase breather. PTO should run smooth, no jerking in and out when engaged, no winning noises. I test all gear ranges focusing on the low gears since that is where most of the machine hours were used. 4wd engages and disengages and once engaged stays there. Run it at all RPM's. Three point raises and doesn’t drift.

That is a complicated tractor so they should sound like they know how to fix it and a shop to back it up. In your gut you will know in 2 min whether it is a good tractor. Ignore the paint and bodywork.

Ditto on everything Buck said. Also---even a YM3000 will eat a CK30 for lunch. The CK30 and a larger Yanmar is like apples and a whole orchard.

I don't know if we can get most parts for that unit. I have never seen one, and it always concerns me when a given model is in short supply. It doesn't mean anything inherently bad about the model, but the laws of supply and demand would indicate less parts availability for it. Make sure you know who is going to work on it...they all need work at some point.

It probably has a turbo and that should be checked. It is about $1200 for a new turbo for that model, which incidentally is available via John Deere. I think the 1050 or the 1070 used the same engine. Transmission hard parts, like shafts and gears are likely not available, so as Buck said, make sure everything is tight. With those disclaimers, I'll say the FX42D is quite a nice tractor. Do make sure that whomever you buy from has a shop, parts and a mechanic.

Thank you Dave Buck and LMTC

The potential lack of parts seals it for me. I was having trouble finding info on the FX42D and wondered if there was a parts supply out there. I appreciate the help. I guess it is back to looking.

Thanks Ron

We have had 2 FX42-Ds in the past, they are a nice powerful tractor full of bells & whistles The FX42 & FX32 are identical machines, only the 42 has a turbo as Dave stated earlier. And yes the turbo whistles.
We have an Fx42 on order, it will arrive here in March. It might be added to the collection if its a jewel. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Buck, I only own 3 machines at the moment, I ran out of room! Im down to 2 yanmar FX235-Ds and a hinomoto JF1. But im always on the lookout for a nice big machine to plow thru the woods with.
It just feels good to have the power when you need it I guess.

I just took on the Branson line, they have some real nice machines to offer. theres a 4210i sitting in the shop that I drool over everyday but its for sale too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have an AF33D with cab that you might just have to own :) Makes the FX series look like a wagon :)

For the first time ever I have more equipment than you. Yikes, I need to reevaluate for sure. Maybe counseling or something. There is probably a 12 step program, but hey nobody likes a quitter right.
