Well, a sheared roll pin will definitely keep the shaft from turning the front wheels! But you need to find out why it broke. Can you turn that front shaft by hand? If everything moves freely enough I'd hook it back up while on stands and see if it engages - gently. If everything's OK (no funny noises of jerks in the wheels) then I'd put it on the ground and drive it around a bit. Were you driving it on pavement with the FWD engaged? Have you put on different wheels or tires? has anything changed or been done differently than before? Let us know what you find............

With this tractor being a "full time 4WD" unit, I would venture to guess that there were probably times when it was driven on surfaces that weren't healthy for a 4WD, such as pavement, concrete, etc. Dave is right, put it together, leave it on the jackstands and test it out, test it out gently though. You might even want to test it with a soft grade bolt while it is on the jackstands. If everything seems OK, then put you a roll pin in it and let it down and go to work.

I checked the front hubs and they turn freely. The front diff seems to work fine too. The lube looks fine, no metal particles evident. I can turn the shaft with a center punch put through the roll pin hole. I put it back together on the jacks and it worked fine. I drove it around on grass and gravel and it seems fine as well. It is full time 4WD, so I don't have much choice when I need to run over hard surfaces. I will just have to watch it when I start grass cutting this spring!

Sounds like you're back in business! Sometimes things just break, I guess. i've seen a roll pin shear before, usually because of stress, but sometimes they just break. Hope that's your case too.
Since this is a fulltime 4wd, does it have a center diff, like a car? or does it just rely on slip from the tires to keep from breaking driveline parts?

I was gonna ask about the front diff. I bet it has one but if it does then why did the pin shear?????

I'm sure it has a front diff, my question is whether it has a center diff, like in fulltime 4 wd cars, such as an Audi. Otherwise, it seems like this would happen a lot. I just wonder how they handle the difference on dry or pavement.........
