There are seldom seen Yanmar model cover pages from publications for the vintage machines. I'll post what I've found over the years.

YM173

(This is the machine that later becomes the YM1300)

Did a YM173 ever make it this side of the pond? In Canada, yes.

With the 2T72 engine. Stroke 72mm, bore 72mm. This is a bare bones SCUT.

Yanmar really does design the tractors to run half submerged! Even back then.

I downloaded this illustration of Yanmar equipment in use, from the Yanmar-Japan corporate website International section, in 2004.

I've wondered if the compression release on these is to recover from a dunking without damage. Rice paddy tractors must flop over or fall in holes occasionally. For the pre-computer models that wouldn't do much harm. Replace the fluids and put it back in service. Then expect 50% of normal life for the starter, alternator, ignition switch, headlight switch. There's not much else that is delicate, and none of it is expensive.

Launched out of the YM173 comes the YM1300. Basically an upgrade of the 2TR13 engine. The YM1300 was a tree frog in Yanmar lime green. YM1300A is the machine in apple red with a few upgrades.

The YM1300 will be an icon tractor for all of history. It's the FIRST 4WD tractor!

1616334476486.png

Before the YM173 and the YM1300, there was an earlier YM12A/13A machine in the history of Yanmar tractors. There is little info on the YM12A/13A machines. This B/W image is available on the Yanmar site under it's history. It's unknown if this was a tree frog or red. This came as the 2nd tractor of Yanmar, but first machine model Yanmar produced. The first model was the A30 made by Shibaura and rebadged as a Yanmar.

Look at the next image. It speak volumes of the 1st 4WD tractor. And YES, this is SOIL and not a rice paddy for tilling.

There are a select few of the Yanmar models that have this rare face like the YM1300.

Every time I see this tractor face, I keep getting a song in my head singing, Bob the Builder. I wonder why ???

The YM1300 also came in a later model called the YM1300A or YM1300DA.

The face, grill and logo totally changed. And a dually rear tire option became available. Even with 4WD, getting stuck in a rice paddy is mucky.

With the tiller engaged that's like 32 wheel drive pushing the tractor forward. So 4wd isn't as important.

Interesting that the 12A was Air Cooled!

Not sure IF the tiller with the YM1300A was forward tilling, backwards or both. I've seen so many of the Yanmar tiller manuals that ANYTHING in ANY COMBINATION is possible.

I do like the thought of 32WD LOL.

Like the YM1300D 2-cly being the FIRST 4WD tractor in history, the YM1401D follows in the same footsteps with a 3-cly 3T72SB as the first in history with 4WD.

It's only rumored, I've not found any evidence (proof) that the 4WD technology was the big item for John Deere to choose Yanmar as the CUT partner. I've read it on Japan blogs, but not finding a posted fact on this. I'll only toss this out there IF anyone has evidence or something strongly pointing to this.

I recalled on one of the tractor forums, someone got this as a Christmas gift.

And if anyone remembers Jay Brown who was the Yahoo group owner of the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group, this was his machine with the famous rear 3PT REL. His machine was the cover image for about 20 years.

In 3D animation for a game, can't recall what one, Maybe Need For Speed, this was made.

What's a REL? I don't recognize that implement.

Out of the SCUT machines, the YM1500 tends to be the most popular and known. It's the second model ending in -00. Setting a precedent that machines ending in -00 are 2-cly for now.

Next up is the YM1502 3-cly. One could say it has the same engine as the YM1401, of the 3T72SB, but not really. It's the 3T72SA. Why did the SB come first vs the SA, not sure. And the SA gives 1 more pony of power. That's note worthy in the SCUT class.

Compared to the YM1500, the YM1502 has more room in the open cab.

This YM1502D has all the front Yanmar red weights. Painted green, they fit any John Deere of that era up to today.

Let's welcome the YM1510 to the group. This machine is very popular in the UK and EU. The unit uses the 3T72-SA like the YM1502.

Here's 5 of then at a UK dealer.

5-YM1510D-UK.jpg

It's a no thrills machine with just simple lamps on the dash with an rpm hour meter.

-yanmar-ym1510-4x4- (8).jpg

The seat area is tight. What makes the machine special are the controls on each side of the seat.

-yanmar-ym1510-4x4- (4).jpg

The Power-Shift is handy too.

IMG_7144.jpg

The wheel base is very tight.

YM1602 - As the power increases, more 3-cly engines become the norm.

Finding a good specimen for this model was a chore. People must work this model into the ground, yet they still keep going.

We now find the engine to have 75mm pistons vs. the last two at 72mm. It's not much of an increase in diameter, however just enough to jump 1 or 2Hp.

bmox14jo.jpg

The front grill on this model is white, others have been black with a non-chrome headlamp bezel. Not sure why.

Now, many of the lever controls are at a person's ankles. This would take some getting use to. Bend down, move a lever or 2 or 3 to get what you need.

Now here is the YM1601. A little out of sequence. Part of the reason is this interesting point. For an SCUT, the open cab area in this class can easily seat a large and tall person. It has a bit more space and the flats on the rear fenders for access are very handy. Additionally, unlike the YM1602 with levers at the ankles and no wiggle room of space, the YM1601 with the same basic 3T75 engine is really the machine to get IF there was a choice in the matter.

The YM1601 is more closely related to the YM1610 as we will see later.

YM1610

One of the more popular models exported to North America and the EU countries.

Both the YM1610 and the YM1601 share many of the body panels and other components. What is hard to tell is what these two models do not share. :giggle: I'll let you do the sleuthing to figure that out. 🕵️‍♂️

The next two images are UTDA perfect restores. It gives a person a look at how these machines would have been on a new showroom floor.

YM1610.jpg

YM1610D.jpg

The YM1610 also had the Yanmar RED logo on the front grill between the eyes. The logo was like the days of having your own Red Rider Daisy BB rifle. In Japan, these Yanmar tractors in red are called shooting tigers.

yanmar-ym1610-2x4-16-japonski-mini-ciagnik-tajecina-526224785.jpg

The YM1610D also came in a Grounds and Recreation lawn care package. This was well before the US models arrived with mid-mower decks.
YM1610DGR.png

ym1610d.jpg

The YM1610 was the first to offer an OE cab, swivel seat for ease in-out, and a cab heater. Likewise this was carried to the YM1810, YM2010 and YM2310. This was the first luxury YM tractor series put out by Yanmar. Long before JD got into doing cabs.

Now one may ask, was the swivel seat all hype or possible? I had to search myself.
