I have a used RS1200 tiller bought straight from an importer of Japanese tractors and implements. Before I put it to work I intend to drain the oil, fill it with diesel fuel and run it without load for about 10 minutes to flush it, then put new oil in.

Does anyone know what weight of oil to use and how much to put into the gearbox and drive train to the blades please?

Thanks for any guidance here

Geoff

Most of the tillers have a label showing capacity in liters. Some have dipsticks for the gear box. The chain drive boxes have a oil level bolt about 3-4 inches from the bottom in the middle of the chain drive box. Fill until oil comes out here. Use 90wt gear oil or 80w-140 if 90wt is not available. Here is a few pages from a 1106 tiller book. It's close to the size of yours. One page shows the capacity stickers, the other shows the oil level bolt (#26).

Thanks Jim,

Unfortunately the tiller has had a really bad paint job so no labels are on it any more, in fact I had to use paint stripper to uncover the plate with the model number.

However, you are right, there is a plug on the drive train about 2/3 of the way up that will give me my oil level there. Nothing however on the gearbox from the tractor PTO, so I figure that if it is just over half full the gears and bearings will be running in an oil bath so that should be adequate, no dipstick on the filler cap to be certain though.

Thanks for the info,

Geoff
