Hey all,

Thinking of buying a Yanmar for home use to replace the riding mower and to do snow removal. Having read a bunch of stuff on the internet you all know how bogged down one can get with information.

I assumed buying a U.S. market Yanmar would be wise for parts inventory however I have read that a grey market 1610D (same as a 226D?) has a better parts supply in the U.S. than the 226D made for the U.S. market!!

My interests are a small a unit as possible to move snow and cut grass. I only have one acre and a few hundred feet of driveway.

What is the minimum horsepower needed for a properly sized PTO blower? Can an 1100 power a PTO blower?

Is a 226D not as wise a choice as a 1610D?

Yes I leave hundreds of variables open. Right now I am looking for some direction to narrow the field a bit.

THANKS in Advance!!

Both good tractors. I think you're correct about parts supply for many grey market models vs. the 3 digit U.S. models.

The 226 is slightly larger (heavier at 2300#'s) with about 2.5 more engine HP. It's a 9+3 geared transmission.
The 1610 is between 19-20 engine HP, weighs around 1600#'s and has power shift with transmission.

Either will handle a box blade and maintain 200' of driveway. I'm not sure about the requirements for blowing snow, but IMO an 1100 may be too small.

It looks like a lot of the grey markets have better parts availability right now. For example, I can get a ROPS for my 1510 yet someone with an equivalent 186/187 can't.

Contact a reputable dealer such as LMTC or Hoye and they can sell you a quality tractor that will fit your needs. I have a 1510D and it does everything I need to do on my 2 acre lot and I sure work it pretty hard. I'm not sure if the 1100 can support a 3ph snowblower or not, but others on this forum would know and I'm sure the dealers would know.

Both are very good tractors, but I can get more OEM parts for the YM226D.

That's a deceptive statement, Danny, though I'm sure you didn't mean for it to be. As you know, Yanmar America's policy is to NOT sell OEM parts in the US for grey market yanmars (as I understand it...I am not a spokesperson for Yanmar America), so officially there are NO OEM parts for 1610s available unless one buys them in Japan and has them shipped....a costly proposition. However, more and more items are discontinued in the Yanmar parts catalogue each year, or at least were while we were a parts distributor. The greys, 1610s in particular, are serviced primarily with aftermarket parts, and basic capitalism dictates that as more need emerges, more supply will be developed. The number of greys continues to increase, while the number of the domestic models decreases (from attrition...there will be no more added to the pool). Thus parts development will continue for the greys because there will be a market. We have app. 4,000 aftermarket items for yanmar tractors available to us now.

We have an OSHA approved ROPS for the 1610. I don't believe Yanmar even offers one for the 226 any longer, do they?

Wayne, I thought that was what I said, I can get some aftermarket parts for the YM226D. I can also OEM parts for the YM226D, only a lot more. Yes we have OSHA approved ROPS for the 1610 and no, yanmar no longer sells them. ROPS is a very important part of the tractor, but it is not the only part. We also have thousands of aftermarket items for Yanmar and other tractors.

Danny, the point I am making is that when you wrote
Both are very good tractors, but I can get more OEM parts for the YM226D.
that tends to imply there are more parts available for the 226 than the 1610, when in fact...NONE of the parts for the 1610 come from Yanmar America anyway. So if you can buy ONE part from the OEM for a 226, that means you can buy more OEM parts for the 226 than for the 1610.

And the volume of aftermarket parts for the 1610 is, I fully believe, greater than what is still available OEM for the 226. And for the same or less money in almost every case.

Well I'll be......I thought the 226 was geared, I then looked at Tractordata.com and it also states it's 9 forward and 3 reverse. So we're both wrong (me & TD.com).

Wayne, I'm going out of town, be back Tuesday and answer you then.Check some of the prices on OEM, I think you will find out that you have it exactly backwards.
