Well I'll be......I thought the 226 was geared, I then looked at Tractordata.com and it also states it's 9 forward and 3 reverse. So we're both wrong (me & TD.com).

I know what you mean, it hard to remember all that stuff. The YM220 & YM330 are gear drive.

Hey all,

Thinking of buying a Yanmar for home use to replace the riding mower and to do snow removal. Having read a bunch of stuff on the internet you all know how bogged down one can get with information.

I assumed buying a U.S. market Yanmar would be wise for parts inventory however I have read that a grey market 1610D (same as a 226D?) has a better parts supply in the U.S. than the 226D made for the U.S. market!!

My interests are a small a unit as possible to move snow and cut grass. I only have one acre and a few hundred feet of driveway.

What is the minimum horsepower needed for a properly sized PTO blower? Can an 1100 power a PTO blower?

Is a 226D not as wise a choice as a 1610D?

Yes I leave hundreds of variables open. Right now I am looking for some direction to narrow the field a bit.

THANKS in Advance!!

I think we got off of your subject, I would go for the YM226D most parts are still available for it and you still have the choice of buying aftermarket parts if you want. Which ever you choose I don't think you will be disappointed.

This is great! The first page confused the heck out of me! LOL! It did get better on the second.
Anyway from what I have gathered in my research the Yanmar is a pretty safe bet for a small tractor that can be fixed down the road should the need arise.
How's this for a follow up question. Are there any particular models, USA or grey that should be avoided either due to inherent problems or future parts availability?

Thanks to all who helped. Wayne interested in what you might have for me to choose from on your lot.

hey vtwinkicker... Why get a blower? If you can get a blade or FEL for the 226, i'd go with that. I agree with mark777, the 1100 is too small for a blower, but either a 1600 or 226 will handle it no problem. You'll like either model. Rugged, powerful, and easy to operate. . . I'd say, if you have a 226 in your area, I'd get it.. (and if you don't, tell me where it is, i might drive over and check it out ! :) )

Took a look at the 226 today. It's listed on ebay. Has a Buehler loader on it and turf tires. Has some rust on the sheet metal in places, mostly edges where the moisture gets through the paint and down to the metal. Overall it looks ok for a 20+ yr old tractor. Meter has 900something hours but its a 3 digit clock. Its red and black, I thought the frames were all grey on these.
Unfortunately I didn't think to bring my camera with me.

Didn't get to start it up since the place was closed. Under the hood appears ok. Some grime on the engine top. Doesn't look like leakage just grime.

No, that model will be red (sheet metal) and black (frame and such). I think I saw that one on ebay. You have to go and test it out.. My concern with that particular unit is I think it's moved from a few different places.. I coulda sworn I saw that unit for sale in MA (central ma) about a year ago. Make sure there isn't anything really wrong... Otherwise, might be a good unit for you..

If you have a tractor savvy neighbor, friend or relative, try to take him/her with you (unless you feel qualified to check it out yourself).

Danny, the point I am making is that when you wrote that tends to imply there are more parts available for the 226 than the 1610, when in fact...NONE of the parts for the 1610 come from Yanmar America anyway. So if you can buy ONE part from the OEM for a 226, that means you can buy more OEM parts for the 226 than for the 1610.

And the volume of aftermarket parts for the 1610 is, I fully believe, greater than what is still available OEM for the 226. And for the same or less money in almost every case.

A downer.

Wayne, maybe this will not be too mis-leading to you { I can buy more new parts for a Yanmar YM226 than a Yanmar YM1610 & at a lower retail price in most cases} I don't recall anyone having problems finding parts for a YM226.
