Yanmar tiller PTO speed

I have an RS1400 tiller on a YM2210. I thought I heard or read somewhere that it can run higher than 540RMP for light tilling or 2nd or 3rd passes... is this correct?

Also, does anyone know the exact engine RPM to achieve 540 at the PTO in 1st? How about engine RPM for PTO at 540 in 2nd? I thought about trying to rig up a mechanical tach of some sort to measure the PTO speed at various RPMs and gear setting to build my own chart, but I'm sure somebody else has already done that /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Chuck,
If I remember correctly, the Yanmar tiller was designed to run at the higher PTO speeds as well. At the PTO speed mark on the tach, you'll be close to 540 in 1st.
I always ran mine in 1st for the first pass and then 2nd or 3rd on the next pass....makes dust out of dirt.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On my 3110 the tach has a double hand it points to engine rpm as well as pointing pto gear and pto rpm. So it shows both engine rpm and pto rpm at the same time.

Thanks Jerry, I'll look at the tach again and see if it has the marks you mentioned... I've never noticed them before, but there is still a lot I don't know about my tractor yet. The soil here is very rich and soft, no rocks, etc. I already made a couple of passes in low, but it seemed like the tiller was running kind of slow. I was running about 2000RPMs. Maybe when it dries up (big mud hole right now) I'll try going over it again with a little higher PTO speed to see how it does. It's not bad at the lower speed, just wanted to know where the limits are. Also plan to check the oil level in the tiller just to be safe, before I use it again.

Thanks for the info kenmac, I'm pretty sure my 2210 does not have two hands on the tach, but I'll check later to make sure. Sounds like a cool feature though! Takes the guess work out /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just double checked, mine only shows engine RPM and KPH. Kind of strange, I really don't need to know my surface speed, but it's there if I need it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

how do you check the oil level on your tiller? I just bought one and I need to know.

Well, to be honest, I don't really know yet. I've only had mine a few weeks and haven't really look at it that close. It looks like there is a fill plug, or maybe a dip stick on the top of the unit. I'll look a little closer tomorrow and let you know if I figure it out. Maybe someone else will chime in here in the mean time...

That's a dipstick on the top of the tiller. (At least it is on my RS1300 tiller). Also, on the left side of the tiller there is a fill plug on the top and an overflow plug on the side. You will want to fill with gear oil from the top until it runs out of the side plug.
