afternoon from the sunny uk . well its the start of the cutting season here was just out and cut a few acres with my ym1500 and wessex finishing mower just as i finished and was going to wash the mower down i notice i have a oil leak from the pto shaft seal? can anybody tell me if i can replace it with just taking the back pto cover of and replace without splitting anything . and dose anybody have a part number? thanks

What type mower and brand?? It all depends? Are we talking about on the mower or your tractor? If the mower many have a back plate that can be removed. If on the tractor i think the whole pto unit will have to be removed, but this can be done without splitting the tractor, but not sure where or how easy the seal will be to get out?

hi its on the pto shaft of the tractor just niticed it today after cutting running down the case bellow the pto shaft seems just when in use will check tomorrow and see if pto shaft has any play or movement as its night time here . will update tomorrow thanks it just looks like a case with 6 bolts i was hoping it just pulled out and i could replace the seal? thanks

Just looking at the parts drawing and seal size I see no reason you couldn't dig the old seal out and tap a new one in. The inner seal size is 38mm which is appx 1.496" that would slide right over the 1-3/8" pto spline. The seal is an H38x58x11TC. Have I done this? No.

I think Winston is right about being able to replace the seal with removal of the cover. Although I would recommend removing the cover to check the bearing and washers if you feel there's excess play in the shaft. When I had mine off I found damaged washes. . If you do pull the cover the PTO shaft will come out with it. If this link attaches, the PTO shaft is #51.

thanks for the reply's just going to have a look at it yes its a 6 bolt plate i was hoping that i could do the job my self but was worried that it might mean spliting things which im not keen on will up dsate later thanks again. billy

I would suggest checking the transmission vent tube beneath the seat toward the rear. If it is stopped up, it could cause the pto seal to leak fluid. I had this happen on my YM1500 four years ago. I was about to replace the seal but then I found the vent tube stopped up. When I took care of that, the seal leak stopped and has not recurred during the last 4 years.

thanks tgeorge i will check and see if i can find the vent tube did you take it of a blow it out with air? ive checked the shaft and no play so if its not the vent im hoping its just the seal . thanks

my vent is just clear vynal tube. You can pull it off and just run something into the J tube to make sure its clear then try and blow through the tube you took off to see if clear, that is if its not a clear hose like mine where you can see any obstruction.
