Ok my dreams for now are gone for my new tractor!! I am new in here I have some other posts about new tractors, but now with our new house I just can't afford it.. We Just got our gas bill and it was super high.... So anyway I will be buying a used tractor. I found a dealer who get yanmars and mitsubishi tractors from Japan. They all have been gone through and new paint and new loaders, most of them have around 300hrs on them and they do come with the owners manu. and a 30 day warrenty. I can get a Yanmar 20hp with power shift for about $7500. What do you guys think??? I have 5 acres and I do need and WANT a tractor real bad. I guess I just have to be more realistic and get a used tractor for now. Please help and let me know what all you experts think.. Thanks

Darins, I'll take a stab at this as I went through a similar process before purchasing my tractor. In fact, my JD790 is a Yanmar built entirely in Japan as is the 4100 and the rest of the 4xxx series use Yanmar engines. Without doubt, Yanmar is a respectable builder. Some issues I recall with non-US spec Yanmars (so called grey market tractors) are parts and service availability. Most didn't have 4X4 or power steering (both nice, but not absolutely necessary with a front loader). There may be issues with PTO speed and rotation direction as well as PTO shaft configuration. I found enough potential issues to steer myself away pretty quickly. If you want more info search this forum and check the Compact Tractor Board. There is a section over there for grey market units. Good luck with your decision!

If you can afford about $3000 more... it will get you a BRAND NEW John Deere 790 with a 730 day "new" warranty with 25 PTO HP etc. etc.

Right now, I understand they have a special financing program going on also to stretch your cash flow.

Good luck.

Darins, I think you will find a few here on Tractorbynet who have bought used, but we are badly outnumbered by buyers of new ones. Typically high used prices and uncertain history of the tractors seem to be the main reasons for buying new.

I, like you, was looking at grey market tractors. On my way to a dealer in grey tractors I passed a dealer with used tractors on his lot and stopped to look. I ended up buying a made-for-America Kubota with 1000 hr., 21 PTO HP, live pto, and power steering for less that most wanted for the grey tractors.

The asking price for the Yanmar sounds high to me. If it is a YM2010, it is an older two cylinder that is not as smooth running as the more modern 3 cylinder engines. The powershift is a nice feature, though. I'd suggest looking around and satisfy yourself you've found the right deal before buying.

Darins,
Yes indeed the family and the home should come before a tractor.

If you don't need 4wd tractor at this time you should be able to pick up a darn good 2wd w/FEL maybe less than $7,500.oo,and futher down the road you could trade it in towards a Kubota.

Enjoy your new home and stay warm.

Darins, here on TBN there is a forum on grey market tractors. You might want to look thru it. It has a thread on Yanmar, and alot of good general information.

Darins, I think that Robs pretty well covered the info on Yanmar. I think that they are very dependable well-made tractors, indeed my 4100 is made by Yanmar. I do think that what others mentioned about price is certainly a big consideration -at $7500 the price difference with used JD's, Kubotas, Ford-NH, is not that much different and I would go that route instead. But if you could find a good Yanmar for less than $5000, then it would be a good consideration. I have seen lots of Yanmars on E-bay, in our state newspaper and machinefinder.com in the $5000 price range.

Re: Yanmar parts, etc

I'd like to clear up a couple points about Yanmar grey market tractors. Parts are on a whole are readable available. There are parts that are not avialable, but that is true for other compacts of the same age. I deal in parts for compact tractors. Yanmars are the easiest parts to get. Try getting parts for a Bolens . It can be a real nightmare, plus the other brands parts are a lot more expensive. Yanmar doesn't have backward running pto's. Kubota & Mitsubishi do have some. Pto shafts are standard 540 shafts. Mitsubishi uses different sizes shafts. Pto speeds are not a problem. As for safety features, when these tractors were made, the US tractors were not required to have them either. As you can see there is much misinformation out there. Yanmar dealers are not required to sell parts for grey Yanmars. Many older dealerships don't have access to grey parts books, so wouldn't know where to start. In buying any grey market tractor , do your home work. . The important thing when buying a grey tractor is to locate a dealer that can support your tractor. . Feel free to contact me at sheaftractor@coiinc.com or 815-284-3226 , if you have any questions or are in need of parts or manuals.

Re: Yanmar 790

I WAS JUST TALKING TO MY JD DEALER AND ASKED HIM ABOUT THE 790 AND HE SAID THAT THEY ARE ALL MADE (790) BY YANMAR. HE SAID THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE A LIVE PTO. HE SAID THAT FOR THE $ THE BEST BET STILL IS THE 4100 .$13,000 WITH A LOADER AND HYDR. I AM STILL LOOKING. THIS SITE SURE HAS HELPED ME OUT WITH LOTS OF GREAT INFO. THANKS
