YanmarUS restore (my 186D)

Hello Mike,
Rather than glow plugs, what you have in your 186D, and the other Yanmars for that matter, is thermostart. There is a small plastic reservoir connected into the fuel line that has a line out the bottom which connects to the intake manifold. At that point there is a heating element that ignites the fuel from the reservoir and preheats the air going into the cylinders. It certainly does the trick on those cold mornings. I'm in the process of doing a little refurbishing on my 169D, so it is interesting to see what you have been doing. Good luck with everything. The tractor is well worth the effort.

Jim

Pretty sharp eyes there. My 186D is an early model. Serial number 00123 if I remember correctly. I have what is called the old style powershift where the shifter is located in about the same location as the gear model shifter would have been and not on the column as yours is. Several things were changed during the life of the 186D model. I encounter them occasionally when ordering parts.

I knew they weren't called glowplugs in the manual, I thought this was just a Japanglese issue. I Guess I'll check that out, is the thermostart fairly reliable (like anything wouldn't be on a YM....)

Just back from a little bush hogging. I really need more weight up front. I only have two suitcase weights, but I brought home several cases of washer fluid, and will try to fill my tires.... After that I 'll probably look for more weights...

Thermostart seems to be very reliable. I haven't read in any of the Yanmar forums of anyone having a problem with it. Mine has worked well for the 8 yrs. that I've had the tractor. I hope you will post the results from filling your tires. I have often wondered how much traction would be gained with a tractor this size. Jim

Jim, when you're done refurbishing your 169D it would be cool if you could post a picture or two. From what I hear your US model 169D is a close cousin to my grey market 1401D and it would be great to see a picture to compare.

Thanks,

Hosejockey,
I'll try to do that. Not to sure when or if I'll get done. I have a feeling that if it ever stops raining I won't be able to stand it and throw everything back together so I can use it. The pictures I have seen of the 1401D sure look like mine all right. Jim

I have another thread called 3PT connectin plate woes where I describe my efforts to fix a blunder. It seems that one area that the 186 stood some improvement was the adapter plate for the top link to the tranny housing, After breaking my housing, I found (with lots of TBN help) the best solution was to make a larger plate, which connected to more area on the housing. This spread out the stress and makes it much stronger. There are excellant pics in that thread.

If I had realized this weakness, I would have made the plate before the break, and it would even be better (no broken parts to bridge over...)
