Here's a link to a yard hydrant that has a self contained drain chamber. should eliminate any concerns about adequate drainage, i.e. in clay soil or high water table.

i have seen galv pipe sticking up 2-3 ft with a faucet on the top, all the way up in Pa; and yes they do freeze, but no, they do not split or break, unless you put a shutoff valve in line and shut it off, or try to cover it up: as long as they are left out, they will freeze from the top down, and push the water back down the line, you try to cover it up or put a shut off valve in and it will freeze at the ground first and then come up the pipe and split the pipe: or freeze and have no way to push the water back down the line(shut off valve) and it will burst..

the faucets i put in are not usable in really cold weather of course: but where folks are getting broken pipes with this method, is when they "shut the water off to the faucet", which means putting a shutoff valve in line, so the water can't be "pushed" back down the line when it freezes: i have seen a couple folks stick a 5gal bucket over the pipe, and of course, it doesn't sit on the ground well enough to keep the cold air out, so the pipe freezes at the ground, and then the pipe burst. 20 years ago, i put in 4 yard hydrants: the one i use the most was replaced twice, so the third time, about 5 years ago, i changed it to this method: since then 2 of the others have rusted shut and broke when i tried to use them, so i am changing them too: the 4th still seems to work fairly well.
