Ralph made a great statement here. Lawns can not fully utilize fertilizer if they are out of balance for ph. Check you ph and get it in balance, fetilize sparingly and enjoy a beautiful lawn.

Cool, but can you pull a tiller with it, put a bh on it, or a blade? Where does the FEL go? Not to mention the MMM..........

I learned something today, and my wants list just got one line longer.

Henro, I was thinking some type of bird had done a number on it, thanks for the photo.

I use Milorganite, one bag on my approximately 1/4-1/2 acre of lawn in the fall. You can also get some good organic chicken-poop-based stuff at farm stores. The Milorganite and chicken-poop-based stuff are pelletized and can be spread with a little hand crank spreader. Cow manure is messy to put down, even dried, non-smelly from a bag. Best thing is to get naked and walk around shaking the bag around with a hole in one corner. Then take a shower outside afterwards. It's that messy.

Otherwise, a simple, cheap fertilizer to use is 10-10-10. Don't use any of that Scotts or other expensive stuff. It usually has stuff to kill weeds that will weaken your grass roots.

Please get a soil test before you start spreading any type of fertilizer. The test should also give you your pH and any liming reccomendations as well as fertilizing recommendations for the type of grass you choose. Around here the the cost of such a test is 10 bucks.

Amen on the soil test. Your local Cooperative Extension Service probably has (ours does) small boxes they will give you to put some soil samples in. It would be worth your time to check into this. If you sow grass this time of year you will need to water constantly in the morning or the summer heat will kill it. The roots will not be established enough to survive. Usually sow mine in the fall.
