It's a hay rake.

KiotiJohn,

That design rake was first marketed in the U.S. by Farmhand about thirty-five years ago. They claimed that there was less leaf loss than with a conventional design.

A couple of my neighbors have them and as far as I know, they like them.

We've had the V rakes here for some time. Vermeer has offered those for some time. Don't know how well they have sold or how well they work. New Vermeer 'V' rake - 1997

Not sure if strong is as relevant to american farmers as how gently it treats the hay. With Alfalfa, more leaves in the bale mean more milk in the bucket.

jim that one is too heavy you must have a big tractor to ride it but if you have 25 hp tractor you can use it.
it has a 17"-23" working width

Pikels,

In my area, most of the tractors are larger than 25 hp. The exception is the Amish, who use horses and mules for field work. They would probably not gain anything from using a 'V' rake since they tend to favor small New Holland balers powered by two cylinder Wisconsin engines. I doubt that the horses could walk slowly enough to keep from stalling the baler on a double windrow.

Wondering if the Amish has changed their approaches to the internet. If they are viewing the net, they may find the rake in the attached picture useful. No plastic, no engine, no electricity. Only the horse and FE alloyed with some C.
