( more bang for the buck, so to speak, by dumping and lighting. )

Many years ago, a fellow who worked for me did that trick with the gasoline and a match to get rid of a big red ant mound. Neither the fire department nor his neighbor were happy about the 3 acres that burned off.

Yes, definitely one of the short-falls to that method. In fact, the irony here where I live now is that there is only about a one month window where prairie fire would NOT be a concern. Luckily I have not had to deal with ground nests since moving from Washington State. Of course for ants, a non-flying insect I probably would not have lit the gas. Just let it sit there and do it's thing. Not necessarily environmentally sound but I can't help but believe the gallon of Bug-B-Gone I used on the last mound was NOT a "greener" solution.

BTW, did he kill the mound??

You'll jist have to trust me on thi sone popster!! the vibration of a lawn mower is much greater than a weed wacker as iv'e tried both..the lawnmower works best...and the nests are sometimes buried down deeper than yould think...had 3 in the back last summer and did the gas trick 3x....to no avail...killed a bunch but when they feel the heat and go back down ..you jist don't gittem all...when the guys come back from their endeavors..they feel the heat..and stay away till cooled down...the fire burns up the pheromones that they put off and jist delays things..things cool down and they r back bout their business!!...the lawnmower cutsem up and just spreads their guts everywhere!! pheromone central....leave it runnin 4 bout an *** or 2 and all of the workers comin back will git into the frenzy...dead peskies!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
then when no more dig up the nest and kill it with the gas...
one of my nests was almost 2' deep!!! the heat form the burnin gas never even affected the queen and her larvae!!!
and she was jist fine...the lawn mower draws thenm out...
don't know what it is but have been doin since i was bout 11..
they jist can't stand the pitch or sumfin...sometimes the gas works sometimes not..the lawnmower always works....plus it's a lot more fun watchin em try to kill some thing that is totally impervious to them!!!!! my all time favorite and from my vast experience in this field ...the funnest!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i like to do the lawnmower trick jist b4 dark ...everyone is home and there is a swarm from ####...much more fun than gas and personally ..........safer 2 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

just my .10 cents...try it !!! you'll love it !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Without a doubt, the way you describe it it does sound like a hoot. OK OK If I find a ground nest here, I will try your way.

Mike,

Make sure you have the video camera set up so we can all see this. It could get REAL entertaining! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If I could keep my lawn mower running for an hour or two
(unattended) I might take you up on it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe it is time I get a new one? I can see it now, "Honey, I need a new lawnmower that runs for more than 20 minutes at a time." "I need to kill some bees with it"

Hmmmmm...........

We have LOTS of them there flying critters to deal with here in Ohio. Ones of every kind. best to know WHAT kind you have to deal with before starting though as YELLOW jackets are different from Paper woaspa and honeybees. ect. White Faced Paper Hornets are by far the worst! they build thelarge football shapped nests that are prized by many collectors as shown above a bunch of posts. Yellow Jackets are usually ground nesters and pretty easy to get using gas & oil mixture at night. or even in day light. (I even use the propane torch to get soem.)
Yellow paper Wasps are not too bad. they are usually pretty tame but black/brown paperwasps are worse with terriable temper and a stinger to back it up!. the foaming wasp spray works wonders on them both... kind of hard to find though. they don't know what to make of the foam and attempt to attack it! lol..

I have several hives of honey bees and leave them bee. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

as for the wasps they wil take care of a lot of smaller inscets as they eat them for dinner...

Eeww, those guys are hornets. Very bad tempered beasts. Good thing you ran away - come back with poison or a flamethrower /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif...

Just a last update to this thread.

Whoever suggested using the Ortho Hornet spray gets the cupie doll.

That stuff is 'lights out' awesome.

I have one (the largest nest ) left to bully - its up in the air but I have the confidence now to do it as this stuff stops on contact. The flail to the ground and die shortly thereafter.

JUST DON"T MISS.

Thanks!
