Gas might work better because of the fumes, but diesel works.

hey folks,
well today marks a first for me..
I was clearing some brush and widening an old road and BAM BAM yellow jackets got me.. kinda funny, on the right forearm right by bucket control.. NAH they could not have known......
Since I am not allergic and it was only 2-- a little peroxide and I was all better...

Realized what was getting me and was able to get out of there on the tractor pretty quick..

Went back 10 min later and dumped a full bucket of dirt on the nest..
yeah, partially dumb, partially revenge, and partially helpful...

BUT the question at hand is: how best to get rid of them without burning them...
this nest is in the woods with lots of dry leaves etc..

So, as with everything else here, I am wondering how you would do it?

what do all of you do as a magic solution?

Looking forward to hearing your ideas!

thanks in advance....

J

Someone has probably already said this but: Soapy water will kill them and the nest. No residual kill so any that don't get covered by the soapy water will live to build again.

I got attacked last winter in 45-deg weather! Although they do go
somewhat dormant, I was chased and stung repeatedly by a few of
the sentry yellow jackets that get posted at the nest entrance. I always
thought that you were safe in cold weather.

BTW, these little ba****ds will sting repeatedly, then bite you when they
run out of juice. I was logging out some dead trees on a 100% slope when
I heard the buzzing and left the area. I had deliberately waited until
winter to avoid just this problem. It has happened to me before in the
summer.

sevin dust!!! a heavy dose at the hole entrance. I know it works since I had a hornet nest in ground right at where the hostas were growing in the city at one of the houses i rent out. I normally use gas but this was in the city. last thing I need is neighbors calling the police. I left a pile of sevin there for a week and I checked it and they were gone.

That's one thing i hate about them.

They sure will bite you.... I have scars from that.

Once they start stinging you they are hard to get off.
