Last night I was awakened by a noise in my front yard and I went out to find that a drunk driver had overturned and hit the telephone pole in front of my house. The right windshield cornerpost hit the pole and broke the pole in half. The car was barely damaged except for a broken windshield and a bent cornerpost and scratches. The airbags did not deploy because the front end was not hit and the driver walked (staggered) away without a scratch after the firemen removed him through the sunroof. The police gave him a field sobriety test which he failed miserably and then booked him.

Every time I hear that new cars are safer...I remember this video...:(

YouTube - HORRIBLE CAR TRUCK ACCIDENT

Don't think it would've mattered much what kind of vehicle those two were driving, new or old. And if you know the entire story behind that clip, they more or less got what they had coming to 'em if you ask me...

Unless you were driving a train, you wouldn't win that one. Even in my "safest car in the world" Volvo I'd be dead, but my family would have $1M to grieve with. At least I think Volvo still pays out upon the death of anyone in one of those cars.

Yes, sadly, those kids got what was coming to them.

Well, it's been a month since the wreck that knocked the utility pole and streetlight out in front of my home. This morning they finally put the new streetlight up and this evening another drunk driver hit the pole and broke it again. This driver had no airbag but he did have his seatbelt on. Once again, the driver suffered no injuries and walked (staggered) away from the wreck where he was booked by the State Police for DUI. I wonder how long it will be before I get my new streetlight this time. The power company puts up a new pole and connects up the electric wires and the phone company repairs the phone wires immediately but we must wait on the light.

I tried putting reflector tape and reflectors on the pole but the drunks keep hitting it anyway. Maybe if the road was straighter......

Maybe you'd be better off without the light, it seems to give them something to aim at.

When I was a kid my parents owned a '59 Chevy Impala 4-door (Batmobile). About 20-minutes after my old man got home from working swing shift at the airport a drunk 17-year old plowed into the rear of the Batmobile.

The result was 3 out of 4 doors wedged shut, the trunk in the rear seat, and a broken rear axle.

As far as the kid and his Mom's car is concerned, the car landed in the next door neighbor's front lawn and almost in their bedroom. Mind you we are talking typical suburb here. When my parents went out to see what happened, they found the kid crawling on all fours and he said to my Mom, "You're not going to call the cops are you?"

I never saw the kid's Mom's car as I slept through the noise.

What's that old saying...God protects fools and drunks. Since this happened way before airbags and seat belts being common, the kid was lucky to put it mildly.
