I have to revive this old thread because it happened again. After a year and 5 days with no one hitting the pole in front of my house, they got it again early this morning. This time they did not break the pole but they sure widened my ditch and stopped up my culvert.

Five years ago, this was a little narrow 2' wide ditch and now it is over 4' wide from all the cars going in it and scraping the dirt from the sides. I wonder if there is any practical way that the highway department could fill the side of the ditch to make it narrow again. I don't want them to put a culvert in the ditch because the ditch stops the cars from coming in my yard.
What was the old saying? You can,t fix stupid.LOL

Luckily, the ditches slow them down before they hit the poles and the houses around here are way back from the road. The drunks manage to never get seriously hurt ...

Sounds like you have your own "Catch and Release" program going on there :)

Time for some Nerf bumpers around the poles. Say old tractor tires? Like mentioned earlier those poles are so soft they shear off instead of holding their own and crushing further into the vehicle. It is still sad to see all of the affects of Katrina down there. I spent 3 weeks helping out after the hurricane.
I do like the idea of a webcam going 24 hours out there. If it had good enough resolution they could nab some of the folks that run off.. Make a website out of it with the camera.. Call it Katrina Corner Cam...

This sounds like a regular occurrence maybe you should lobby the powers to be (State or Town) for a guard rail.

I have thought of that but I have found 2 reasons against it.
One: I wouldn't like the looks of a guard rail in my front yard.
Two: I am afraid that the guard rail would just bump the crashing car back into oncoming traffic causing a head-on collision endangering the lives of innocents instead of allowing the driver, who is usually drunk, to get stuck in the ditch or having a one car collision with the pole.

How about some boulders, increasing in size? The first one dents the bumpers, next one takes out the tranney, third one gives the engine a 6" lift, etc....

You could judge the cars on how many boulders they "ate" like pacman...

It would cut down on the drive-offs too.

I have found that the ditch accomplishes this purpose just fine. :)

What about a natural earth berm. Wouldn't be a guard rail that you are looking at. I guess that putting the ditch into a culvert would be cost prohibitive by the county.

Then again, but a berm in and turn it into a sport, see who can fly the furthest...

You need to figure out a way to keep the drunks locked in their cars until the police show up with the breathalizer. Perhaps a putbull chained to the poll would work

You need a gravel filled runaway truck ramp like we have in the mountains here. A thick bed of gravel will be just like water brakes were on the old rocket sleds NASA used to use in the 50's & 60's.
