So I just read through EVERY 4 in 1 post on this forum and couldn't find any answers to the following question. I have seen 4 in 1's carry logs horizontally (like a dog holding a bone in its mouth), I was wondering if the bucket could be angled to allow one to carry the log sticking straight out (more like dragging) similar to a cigar sticking out of a mouth. I agree that for stacking logs, carrying them horizontally is great, but for moving them out of the woods quickly and easily (without using heavy chains), it seems dragging them is the only way. I can see myself picking up a freshly felled tree like a dog grabs his bone, only to run into two still standing trees like a Stooge trying to walk out a door with a long pipe.

Thanks for the info

Hi Anthony,

Yes, you can use the 4in1 bucket to do as you are suggesting. But, you'll have to have that butt end of the log raised a bit so you can grab onto it from underneath and the best you can do is to drag it unless if it's a short length that you can pick it up stoggy style without tipping the back end of the tractor up. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

BTW, did you get the JD video I sent you? Have you watched it yet? Your thoughts??

You can drag with your bucket if you want but, as Rancar pointed out, you might have more than a little trouble getting hold of it. If you're only interested in dragging it out you could lift it dog bone style and then wrap some chain around the end to use to drag it out. Let the log back down then hook the chain to your tractor and away you go.

You can hook to your bucket and lift one end and drag the other or hook to the back of your tractor and drive out while comfortably seeing where you're going.

As much as you want to use your 4 in 1 to do this, there is a far, far simpler way to get those logs out of the woods. Get yourself a pair of logging tongs. With those you can grab the tree where you want and just drag it out. It's a much, much simpler way to do it.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Logging tongs? I like the sound of that. Can you give me some more info on that??

Bob, I did get the video on Saturday (actually got it on sunday, since we were away this weekend). It was helpful in illustrating the more common uses for a tractor. Thank you very much for sending it. I will be putting it in the mail tomorrow (tuesday). /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Gary, I looked up logging tongs on Google and found some great info on them. I think you are right, they are the way to go. Thanks for the advice!

Anthony,

You may want to review beenthere's thread below. He shows a set of logging tongs and how he uses it. I too have a set and I think this may be the better way to go.

Here are tongs married to a 3 Pt hitch lift. You got to watch the hitch point so you don't tip the tractor over /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
That wouldn't be hard to make.
Here is the web site;

Hi Ray...

Do you know if the U Frame shown in your picture attachment comes with the category 1 or 2 lower lift pins? I looked at their website at their price list and couldn't find prices anywhere. Apart from e-mailing these guys to get prices, would you know if there are any web posted prices somewhere that I'm missing somehow? Also, I see no phone number or address for this company. Do you know how I can get in touch with these guys. This is something that I could use with my log skidding.

Here are three places you might want to look to see more about logging tongs and related products. You can even order what you want from them if you don't have a local supplier.

Baileys

Ben Meadows

Forestry Suppliers

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry Rancar, I don't have any more info. It is easy to change the lower pin sizes between Cat. I or II.or to shim up a Cat. I to a II.
