so I'm about to take the plunge on a 448 hoe (maybe even tomorrow.) This will be going on a 3320. From what I understand, there is a specific subframe that is needed for hookup to the 4xxx series..but not on the 3xxx series. I am a bit confused as to how this mounts. I guess there is some sort of rockshaft assist and that it is not a 3pt mount. How rigid is the mount-up? Not that I have seen any reports of breakage and the dealer says that it is quite stout, I am still curious.
thanks

There is a permanent subframe for the 448 that mounts to the tractor. The 3PH is used to lift the hoe onto this frame. Your dealer should have more info.

yea he gave me some sort of vague answer about plates, etc..but when I mentioned that one of my reasons for going 448 over 447 on a 3xxx was to keep the hoe if I go up one series, he stated that in doing that in the future I would need some sort of subframe specific to the 4xxx series machines. That comment is what was driving my curiosity

It's not a sub frame just a different bracket for the 4000 series machine. The 3000 series also has there own bracket. There is nothing that goes on the 448 itself. The mounting method is exactly the same on both series. I have the 448 on my 3320 you'll be happy you picked it over the 447. Anyone who says its not meant for the 3000 is just plain wrong. Make sure they bump your relief valve to the max so your rockshaft can lift it.

grin...thanks for the advice (that will generate a new question). where and how do I bump the valve? If it is as simple as running it into a tree several times, I can handle that!

I'd have the dealer do it. They did when I got the 448 installed.

The ground is still frozen here, but soon as it thaws, I think that's what I'll do with my 447 until I figure out why I wanted it in the first place. At least it will keep DW from asking "What'd you buy that thing for anyway?"

Just an FYI about your backhoe and tractor. I have a 448 for my 4400 CUT. With the installation of the subframe mount you cannot use the mid pto for a mower deck because of the back hoe mount. I don't know the specifics about your tractor frame, but I wouldn't spend the money for the mid mount PTO if you won't be able to use it.
Good luck with the Backhoe, you will find all kinds of uses for it.

thanks for the info. maybe others could also chime in regarding MMM and 448? I ordered the MM pto at a time when I thought I was gonna use it to mow the lawn (or maybe a time that i used that to convince SHMBO that a
27k tractor is need to mow our wet 1/2 acre.. :) Anyway, in using the machine around our woods..and in one area of the lawn to get it too the shed I have made one heck of a mess. I do not see myself mowing with this machine. I will keep the MM pto on in case someday I get more lawn or add a front snowblower. (Dont own the deck) thanks for the advice..keep it comin!

I was just at my JD dealer asking about what was reqd to mount a 448
on a 4720 tractor. I saw the "bracket", which mounts to the rear axle
casting and prob weighs 100 lb or so. It is not like most other subframes
in that there are no rails to transfer moment forces to the forward part of
the tractor. I did not have my Nikon with me at the time, unfortunately.

It's not a sub frame. The 448 can be used with a midmount mower. The older series that the 3000 replace can mount a 448 but need a subframe. The 448 mounts better than any other brand out there. I seriously considered the woods because of the thumb but after seeing how the 448 mounted and became part of the tractor it was a no brainer. Look at the other guys tractor with backhoes they all stick way out and look out of place the 447 and 448 look like there a permanant part of the machine.

Well Matt, you can call it something else if you want.

Wikipedia does not make a distinction about how large it has to be to
be a subframe.
Subframe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A week does not go by with out a poster asking, "gee, should I mount my
backhoe on the 3PH or get a subframe?" It does not help to be saying,
you now have THREE choices:
> 3-pt
> subframe
> big-a55 brackets if you got a JD

As to the method JD uses for the 448 on 4x20s or 3xxxs, it is a very good
thing that the hoe is mounted close-in to the the back of the tractor. It may
not be a good idea to NOT have a longer subframe that transfers
more bending forces forward however. The same weight/hp Kubota L5740
uses a much longer subframe for the BH90. It certainly looks more substantial.

maybe you are talkin the 4xxx I guess when compaired to a grand L, my machine is more the size of the L3400, bit over a 1000 lbs less before the larger tires/loader etc. After doing a bit of research..the 448 looks great..just as the CX loader rocks (almost si-fi on how it comes off) JD didnt cobble it together with these combos....I'm excited to ruin the lawn

Here is the subframe for a 448 attachment on a JD4720, or one of the
other 4000 series Twenties.
