I'm looking at attacthing a lean-to to the side of my pole barn and not really sure how to get the top to seal up next to the exsiting wall, because I'm going to drop the starting point down the wall from the top of the building about 5 foot. The buildings side wall is 15 foot and I want the lean-to to start at 10 foot. So what would be the eisiest way to join the roof line to the side wall,it doesn't nesasarlie have to be 100% water tight.

Your siding Mfg. has what you need. (see attached) you can use Endwall flashing either flat or notched for rib style. You'll need to attach some sort of header board to the garage wall for the rafters to attach to. The metal siding / roofing company should have spacers to match the ribs in the siding. If not then you may need to cut out a horizontal section of siding to attach the header board to the structure behind it.

I'm attaching a 16' x 32' pole barn addition to the back of my garage. My roofing panels will butt up to the garage wall then I'll be using the endwall flashing notched for rib to complete the connection.

Georges method is the right way, but I have seen some folks that didn't want to go to the expense just use a reversed corner flashing and caulk the top where it is flush with the existing side well. Didn't seem to leak but I can see how it may in time

If you plan to use the side wall type metal for the roof of the lean-to
you can simply line up the Corrugated humps so that they line up to the corresponding ones on the wall, depending on the angle of the roof being in a slant
they should over lap and fit well together, although if the metal doesn't go all the way to the wall you could cut a U into the hump to let it jamb up tight, then you can run a large beed of good qulity Silicone or sealer of choise, I would rather advise to get some flashing to overlap the new roof metal, but as metioned there would be a large gap on both behind the flashing and where it lay on top of the roof, this would be as you said the "easiest way" the best way would be to cut out a section of metal from the side wall were you plan to attach the roof and slide a crempt/ bent flashing under the wall metal and then have it hang out when installing the roof metal slid under the flashing, I have seen foam seal pc that are used to fill the corrugated gaps but i think this is more for sealing out air rather then water. this could be utilized along with the sealer to keep out the water as well, The lack of minimal overhang on the roof above is going to present a problem with water pooring right down at the roof/wall connection.

You said about ten foot, it appears in the picture of that sidewall that the top purlin is about that ... so snap a line and cut your exsisting side metal so you can slip flashing behind that wall and on to your new lean to roof ... done deal.

Do it the right way, the first time. Why attach something that is really poorly done, to a beautiful barn? It really hurts the value of the barn to have something attached to it that is subpar, leaks, looks hokey and well..... you understand. When I hear the words, "fill it with chalk" I squirm.

Attached are some photos that chronicle the piece of junk lean to that I inherited. I had to tear off that roof. I had to drop the old rafters and roof sheeting, cut it up and haul it to the land fill. Nasty job. I had to raise the outside wall 18" to make it practical, cut and install new rafters 8" higher up the wall, sheet it, shingle, sheath the outside, side it, trim it and build new doors. Now it is appealing, useful, dry, and adds usefulness and some value.

Don't build something that you or someone else will just have to demo in a few years because it wasn't right. Waste of time and money. Just my $.02

I know of an addition that was tacked on and caulked. Looks like snot. do it right, take the siding off, put a header, etc, cut the metal, use a endwall transition from wall to lower roof, etc. Make it look good and water tight. I will probably add a side to my barn in a couple years.

Check out endwall detail here:

Thanks guys, that was the type of info I was looking for, also the links were a bunch of help too. I guess I'll give the contractor that built the building for me a call, I could at least get the materials from him to do it correctly. I plan on doing it myself, just need too get started correctly.

I am planing an addition to my pole building also. It is to look about like George2615 is doing. It looks like mine is over engineered however. I like Georges better. Guess I should go back to the drawing board. I have also had problems figuring out the seal. This discussion helped a bunch. thanks
