This past week my wife had some sort of “mid-life” /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif situation that compelled her to acquire a 10 week old Golden Lab to add to our household of animals….. that could already be referred to as the “Wild Kingdom” /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. We now have 3 dogs and a cat. After her whole-hearted support in my tractor purchase (over 2 years ago…. and I’m still thankful! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) how could I complain. So… from this point on, every night will be a 3 Dog Night.

We now have a Golden Retriever, Black Lab and a Golden Lab. I am still so thankful about her support on my tractor purchase that I have totally taken over the “crate training”. (Maybe I’m taking this a little too far….) /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Now, for the inexperienced, when you look into the eyes of a 10 week old puppy, how difficult could this be? Personally I think quintuplet babies would be on a par. Especially when you try to respect the existing “pack” rules of the other dogs. Sleep deprivation is a major part of my life now.

Anyway, I had a meeting yesterday and thankfully my company is very relaxed with “Meeting Etiquette”. I brought Halle the puppy to the meeting and before long, she basically took it over. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif In fact, I am a little concerned that she may be going after my position. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Now that I think about it, everybody did pay more attention to her than me…. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Greg,

That laptop looks just like mine, Dell Inspiron 5000. I sure like mine. Now I do have a lab also but a bit older, I do remember two years ago though when mine was that small. Fun dogs if you get through the chewing years.

Junkman.... That would be the one place that she hasn't pee'd ...yet. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif (Great photo)

On the topic of dogs, do you have any pearls of wisdom regarding the transition from a 2 to 3 dog household. We just reduced the size of her crate down to a cat crate last night and put her up on a chair so she could see me all night. I finally got some reasonable sleep. I only had to get up with her once at 2:45am.

Our male dog has accepted her like a good Big Brother. Our female dog has lived up to her title as ***** with how she is treating the new addition.

I run for exercise and always take the dogs with me. I have a bridle leash for both dogs. Yesterday I hooked up the puppy between the 2 big dogs and went for a short run. This seemed to do wonders for all of them. I think I could see the beginnings of new "pack" relationships. It was really funny watching the little puppy trying to keep up with the "Big Dogs". I'm going to try to get a picture of it today.

Any suggestions or thoughts on building a healthy pack relationship?

Thanks,
Greg

They just have to work it out for themselves. Feed and water early in the day and you will sleep all night. In the morning, just put on some clothes and take the puppy out immediately. The puppy will need to go worse than you will, and you can hold it. If not, then make it a family affair.... if you live in the woods. It takes about till they are 6 months old before they will hold their bladder regularly. Good luck.... with 3 dogs, you are going to need it...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Junkman,
Thanks for the suggestions. Although I ran that family affair part by my wife and she won't participate, so I guess it will just be me and the dog.....

If I understand you correctly you are not getting sleep because the dog yelps while in the cage at night? I find placing a blanket over the cage (like a parrot ) covering it complety puts the dog to sleep in no time flat....They will find security in the cage with a cover over it at night...
make sure the Pup has all its shots before going outside and around other dogs beside the ones you have. While they are so young they pick up colds and bacteria from other dogs too quickly and easily....It sounds like the dog's will do fine together, but watch them for jealousy just in case....all of them get equal affection from you, dont focus too much on the little guy while the others can see....its amazing how jealous they can get, or their feelings get hurt when the master shows another dog affection...

Yeah Greg, you go right ahead & blame your wife. It's pretty clear that you wouldn't have any part of this pup.
Thankfully, mine is only a 2 dog, 2 cat house + 1 horse in the barn.

Got news for you, that aint covered under warranty, and when they find out you have liquid damage, nothing ever will be covered again....................3 years from now that will come back from crystals and damage that harddrive that has been working great since the accident........
believe me I know, I am sending the bad warranty report to the company Monday. they made the mistake of asking what I thought of them............
