Hi All

I have read with great interest all the banter concerning tillers over the last few weeks. I am in the market for one to use with my BX2200. I started by doing something I don't always do - CONSULT THE MANUAL. Kubota recommends that you should only go up to a 42" tiller weighing at most, 375 pounds (same for box blades).

I noted that CCM and Sweet have an ongoing feud between Italian vs. Turkish tillers /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. TSC has the King Kutter. All these weigh in at 500+ pounds (KingKutter is 600 lb) for a 48" and I didn't see anyone even concerned a little bit. Many of you said that the tillers are working great and that's the bottom line, but I am surprised that the weight is not an issue. It was encouraging to note that "webhund" likes his 49" MR-145 as I was also concerned that 16 PTO HP was going to be a bit underpowered.

Before I buy one I will price replacement tines. I have a Satoh Beaver that came with their (37" I think) Model 2PR-1100S tiller. When I bought this property the tractor conveyed and I checked prices for tines 4 years ago. They wanted $300 then and last week I checked again to find that they went up to $560 plus freight, plus tax so that's why I decided that my best bet was to get a tiller for my BX. It may be a while till I need new ones, but you have to consider shipping from Turkey or Italy /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Cheers

Hi Sam,
I have a JD2210, which I think is comparable to your BX. I bought a Bush Hog tiller that does work well. It is a 50" tiller weighing in at 418 pounds. I do not want to use this without my FEL attached. It makes the front extremely light, hard to steer.

375 pounds only? Somethings must be wrong.

Here are some other various tillers with their weights - ASC Tillers I think they have other tillers not listed on their web site yet.

SamR . . . I think a lot of people buy tillers that are too big for their tractors. Often the posters state that they just don't set the tiller all the way down and they make two passes. Well to me that means they are using too much fuel and too much time. If someone uses a 54" tiller instead of a 46" tiller, they are tilling several inches wider, but it still takes 2 passes so it takes longer overall.

As for weight, size increases weight. I would follow the tractor manufacturer's recommendation on weigth and tiller size. And from what I can tell, most BX owners buy a FEL but still Kubota sets a weight limit, it may have a lot to do with the 3pt's practical capacity and nothing to do with a counter-balance issue if the FEL is removed, but I don't know that for fact.

I have a small NH TC24D (a little bit larger than a BX series tractor) and I use a big heavy 60" snow thrower and a big heavy 60" RFM, both are within the weight recommendations of New Holland, but both require front end weights on my tractor to keep the tractor from riding with the front end off the ground!!!

Hi Sam,

I have a Howard R220B-125 tiller that I use on my BX22. It's 50 inches wide and weighs 350 lbs.. Haven't used it with the loader off yet but my front tires are filled and I have the front weight kit I can put on if I need a little more weight in the front.

Hi Dave
I do not foresee ever buying the FEL for my BX since my neighbor has a skid loader or three that I can borrow whenever I need one. It does seem like most are using the FEL for a counterweight when tilling? I can call and check but I was curious as to what the weight kit you have consists of for the BX.

Hi Sam,

The weight kit I have consists of the following:

BX8064 Weight bracket Kit.
This is the bracket that bolts to the front of the tractor to hang the weights. It will not work with the BX22 style grill guard in place. I'm not sure about clearance with the BX2200 grill guard though.

The suitcase weights are part number BL8060 and weigh 55 lbs. each. You can mount 3 of these on the BX series as I was told. The weight bracket is drilled to accept 5.

You also need a BL8062 bolt kit for each weight.

If you have a FEL on the tractor the weights will be in the way of the center cylinder if the FEL is lowered.

I bought the weights to use when I use the tiller. When and if I get the time I want to fab up a bracket or modify the one I have to work with the BX22 grill in place.

Hope this helps. Dave...

Thanks for the detailed info Dave- I will have to check into the weights from my dealer.
