Yet another \"What tractor should I buy\" post

Hi all.

I searched through quite a few other threads and saw some great advice, so I thought I'd post my situation and see what CUT you guys thought might be a good fit for me.

My wife and I just bought an old farmhouse. It has 4 acres of grass to cut, all of it on a sloping hillside, and a 400 foot driveway that I'm going to have to plow throughout Wisconsin winters.

I'd prefer something with 4 wheel drive, due to the plowing, and a large mower deck that mounts under the tractor, just because that is what I'm used to.

So what do you guys think? Thanks for any advice.

You say you have 4 acres of lawn and it doesn't sound like you are planning many trips into rough terrain. I would suggest you look at the SUB-CUT class tractors. Kubota BX, New Holland TZ, Massey CG and Case/Farmall DXe tractors will all suit your needs. They will easily maintain the 400' driveway as well. Another great choice would be to go up SLIGHLY in size to the Kubota B7510. It is still light weight, won't tear up the lawn when mowing it, and will give you a bit more ground clearance. The Sub-CUTs will give you a very low relative center of gravity so it will be more stable on the slope you talk about, are EXCELLENT mowing machines, are are still pretty darn capable at doing some heavier duty tasks. All the Sub-CUTs come with 4wd and all have HST transmissions. For mowing duty you will really appreciate the HST, especially if you are mowing around a lot of obsticals like shrubs, patios, trees, etc.

I would suggest a ck20, it's a bit heavy for mowing, but it will handle everything else much better. Kioti ck20

You might also want to look at the Deere 2210. I assume with 4 acres you'll find other projects to do besides mowing and plowing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif A lot of the guys on the forum have them with belly mower, front end loader and backhoe.

My apologies to the green guys on the forum, I too should have included it in the list of recommended Sub-CUT choices. It was a simple omission.

As for the CK20, I will be the first to say that it is a fine small frame tractor, in fact I think it is probably the best value small frame machine on the market now. The main reason I did not recommend it is due to the fact that KiotiJohn has reported a couple times that the MMM on the CK20 is not yet perfected. That is no reflection on the tractor, but the deck is apparently being redesigned? The other reason I didn't recommend it is because of the weight, and as the original poster doesn't seem to have tasks in mind that are really in need of a lot of weight, it didn't seem prudent. That is also the same reason I didn't recomment the NH "TC" class machines as they weigh only a few hundred pounds less that the CK. But the small frame B7510 from Kubota is light for its size and for mowing that is an asset.

Welcome to TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
My idea of a large MMM would be 72". That will require a tractor with over 20 PTO horsepower.
My first suggestion would be to give the Kubota B7800 a look. Nice sized tractor with the power to do other jobs. If you want more features, look at the B26-3030 models. Other manufactures have models in this range also. But I'm most similar with the Kubota's . I have a B2910 which the B3030 replaced.
Give all the different models a try. Buying a tractor is something most of us only do a couple of times in our life. Take your time. In Wisconsin you may find dealers that will bring out different model tractors for you to try.

Take a look at the Mahindra 2015hst, 60" mid mower, 915 lift capacity at the pins to full height on the loader, or the 2615 is a larger frame, higher lift capacities, and availible with a 72" mid mower.

Bob Skurka -

No apologies necessary. Besides, I won't officially be a green guy until 3:00 today! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So I'm going to guess that about 3:01pm you will be posting some pictures!!!

Nice thing about many of the Sub-CUTS they have more horsepower than many of the small frame CUTs so there is plenty of power to run the mower decks. I'm sure you will like your JD2210, there seem to be quite a few owners here on TBN and I have not yet seen any reported problems.

RONJHALL . . . I guess you read the post differently than I did but were still thinking along the lines of the lightweight tractors. As we both operate B2910s on our lawns, we can both testify to the fact that the B7800/B2910/B3030 class machines will do the job very very well, the light weight and small size of these tractors, combined with the high HP makes them great on small properties. I guess I wasn't thinking of a 30hp class of tractor for 4 acres, but then again Henro has 2 tractors on 3 acres and one of those machines is a BX series and the other is a B2910!
