Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

Instead of having a nice blend from the driveway to the shoulder, why not have a nice drop-off, say about three or four feet deep? Unless they're stupid, they'll learn they'll get stuck if they get too close to the edge. You can always charge them to pull them out with your tractor.

To cover your butt, post a sign warning the, of no shoulders.

"One day he filled his garbage cans with quick crete. He never had a problem with someone hitting his cans again"

I've decided to do something like this with my mailbox, I have one of those very large "rural" types, I'm going to put a regular sized one inside it and fill in the void with quikcrete. When they swing the ball bat at it they're in for a surprise, and probably a sore arm too............. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

Careful with that. If a car hits it and that special mailbox goes through a windshield and kills someone, you get to be the defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit.

Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

My b-i-l had a heavy drinking neighbor who would always back out of his driveway and destroy their mailbox. So, being a country boy, my b-i-l sank 4' of an 8' piece of 10" pipe into a buried 55 gallon barrel filled with concrete and filled the pipe too. The box and cross arm were set up to easily "breakaway" but the post, well, that was another story.

It took two wreckers to get his (totaled) car off the post. It was never touched again. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As a side note, it taught the snowplow moron a lesson too. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

It is a pain I'm sure but the guilty party may not have even peeled out with malicious intent. I drive a pickup truck and nicely groomed gravel drives are a bear to get out of and into traffic without spinning tires. Its just because the rear ends are so light.

Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

You could put a cheap X10 camera out there hidden in the bushes and connect it to a cheap VIDEO input card on a PC. Then use the free trail version of Active Web Cam to capture the video. It has a motion sensor that detects a change in the picture, has adjustable sensitivity, and a lot of neat features. After you use it a while, you may want to purchase it. It really works well. I use it at my job to catch people pilfering Coca Cola from my under-desk refrigerator($29.00 web cam + software to protect 50 cents worth of pop). /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

Ah HA!!! The truth comes out! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

What's really funny is that I bought this little fridge to keep my lunch and some pops in. The morning after I installed it under my desk, pop started disappearing. A couple weeks later I installed the camera and let my co-workers know, just to be fair. Haven't lost a pop since. Have lost some tools and parts, but got them back from the offending "borrowers" after calling them and asking if I could have it back when they were done using it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. That program that I linked to will detect motion, record it to the hard drive, e-mail me a picture and/or upload a video to a website, to name a few functions. The motion sensing works by detecting change in the picture, so no actual motion sensor hardware is needed. It monitors the pictures all the time, but only records when it changes. You can set it for all kinds of resolutions, delays, schedules, etc... worth a look. It does have an ad that appears on the bottom of your screen that go away if you buy the product after testing. But they are small and only advertise some of the other products that the company sells. If you minimize the program window, the ads disappear until it is maximized again.

Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

Hey Getut. I saw ,what I assume to be the culprit, peeling out . At the time i was farther up my driveway with a string trimmer. I assure you that they weren't just turning around.

Well I tried to be nice and just rerake the rocks to cover up the track marks. The next day more tracks appeared. That was enough. I went out to the shop and found a 5 foot piece of 1/4 and drove about 132 nails into it. Then I layed my "trap" on the side of my drive on top of the culprits old track marks. I then hid in the woods with the video camera to tape my success. Well two hours passed and nothing. My wife called me every 20 mins on the cell phone asking me to tape myself out in the woods. I would not be daunted by nay sayers. I gave up for the day.

The next evening we had to go to the hospital to have a baby. When we returned from the hospital I noticed that someone had peeled out in my driveway again. Grrrr! This time however they got ahold of my "trap". My only regret was that I couldn't be there to tape it. My wife's only regret is that I didnt tape myself hiding out in the woods.

Its been a week not and "knock on wood" no more peel out marks in the drive way.

Re: Yikes! They\'re peeling out in my new driveway

hey, you forgot the most important fact: boy or girl? Congrats!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now about those abusive driveway users: try something like a gate which closes at the front of the driveway, or a tire chain-- this'll let them back in, but once they drive out, their tires get peirced..... That can be bad too...

I too have this problem-- but, they don't peel out, they just leave 12 to 24 empties on my driveway... Not sure how to handle it yet, keep hoping that I'll catch 'em.. with that said, a motion trigger light might do wonders...

Good luck.! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
