What would be the correct gear to run a 48" tiller with a 1500? I tilled today in low range, 3rd gear, about 2200 rpms. I read in manual that you shouldn't run in low range for long periods of time.

The ground is kinda sandy, not hardpacked clay.

Thanks,
RandyH

I have always tilled in low range, 1st gear with the PTO in 1st gear (540rpm). With sandy soil you might could go with a higher ground speed. I have never heard anything about not running in low range for long periods of time. Where did you get the manual?

Brent,

I guess I read it wrong...it says to run PTO in 1st gear only.

I've got another question...I can't seem to find the lever that adjusts the drop speed of the 3pt. hitch. The manual shows it near the knob the locks the 3pt. hitch, but I can't seem to find it. Can you help?

Thanks,
Randy

I think I have a picture of it at work. I will post it tomorrow if I find it. I know a lot of people don't agree, but I always used the knob below and in front of the seat to slow the 3 pt decent. There is a little lever under the seat that most say is for slowing the 3 pt.

I have a 1500D and I always till in low range and 1st gear with the PTO in 1st gear as well. I run the tractor between 2200-2400 RPMS.

I run my tiller in PTO mid and high. with the trans in low 1st though 3rd . It all depends on what type of soil you have i would think. The lever i use to slow PTO drop is on the right side below the seat. The one in front of the seat is to adjust raising speed i believe. I wouldnt suggest running your PTO in high while tilling unless you know there isnt any rocks or stumps. My garden is old and i know there isnt anything in the dirt.

That causes my hydraulic pump to squeal if I try to operate the 3ph when that knob even accidentally gets partially closed.
