Actually.. an ammeter is a series device.. a voltmeter is a parallel device. You insert an ammeter into a circuit, you attach a voltmeter across a circuit. My previous post tells exactly how to install the volt meter.

If we are talking about a volt meter, then i would install it as imentioned. referencing ground, and power from t he switched side of the ignition. If you are talking ammeter.. then, technically you coul dinstall it in an ac or dc line.. all it is is a shunt volmenter.. it will still measure current flow..e tc.... however most ammeter setup I see are to measure net charge/discharge from the battery, and are wired so that one side of the meter has all the loads, and the other is what is tied to the battery.

( Sorry. Instead of a voltmeter I have a D C amp meter. Whould it connect the same way )

NO.. an ampmenter is a series device.. it's actually a shunt.. if you connected an ampmeter the way i told you to connect a volt meter.. you may have damaged the shunt ampmeter.

Ampmeters get connected in line.. not across. I'd find the charge wire that goes to t he battery, and connectt he ampmeter into that line.. that is.. one side to the meter.. the other side of the meter to the battery.. or wherever the charge line is hooked.. like the solenoid hot side.. etc..

Please be specific when asking for electrrical advice.. especially on 2 very different itemps like volt meters, and ammeters..
