Sometimes the 1700 just clicks when you turn the key. Keep turning the key and eventually it will start cranking and it cranks strong and fires right up. It is a new (not rebuilt) starter; new, honker of a battery that is fully charged; tight and clean battery cable connections on both ends. Had this problem while buying it and they put a rebuilt starter on it and it did it too. They guy there hammered the starter and it would start turning over. They then put the new starter on it. What am I missing? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Tnx, Steve

Try running a set of "good" jumper cables directly from the battery to the starter, (+) to pos. connector, (-) to starter case. If the starter turns fast, recheck/clean the connections, if same problem, still bad starter or battery. You need at least 12.6v for starting, 12.75 is full charge.

Could also be a bad cable. Corrosion could creep under the jacket of the cable and cause problems too.

3 different starters, good battery, clean cables. You said it spins well once the starter engages.

I'd say the next thing to check is the circuit from the battery, through the ignition switch, to the solenoid. The Thermostart draws 15 amps which passes through the ignition switch, and it seems to me that must wear out the ignition switch eventually. Maybe there is just enough current reaching the solenoid to partly engage it. Try jumping across the ignition switch terminals and see if that engages the solenoid better.

Check the ground wire from the battery to the point where it connects to the chassis. I had an intermittent problem similar to yours and here is where the connection was not solid. Cleaning and tightening here eliminated my problem.

If they didn't replace the solenoid when they did the starter.. I would look at that.. also at the power to the soplenoid. Next time it does that, jumper a wire from the battery to the solenoid switch terminal.. could be as simple as a bad ignition switch not providing power to the solenoid.
