Folks,

I recently purchased this tractor the other day. I have yet to purchase the user/service manuals for it. Knowing it was going to freeze last night, i went ahead and dropped the lower radiator hose, draining all that would come out then proceeded to put in about 1gal of pure antifreeze. And of course let it run for about 10 minutes.

I know this particular model has a water pump so im not worried about that but i would really like to know what the total capacity is including both the engine and the radiator.

Thanks,

Jack

The manual (YM240, same tractor US version) says 4.4 quarts not counting the overflow bottle.

Wow, I am running almost all antifreeze then. Will that hurt the engine in that particular model?

What I've read here is that a high proportion of antifreeze doesn't conduct heat as well as pure water but you need some antifreeze blended in year-round for corrosion protection, so around 40% is recommended.

If you aren't running it hard, what you have in there now hasn't hurt anything.

Take a look at the chart on the antifreeze jug and go from there.

I hooked up a 1 liter bottle right above the battery, next to the radiator and fed the overflow tube from the rad into it. sealed it up good. then filled it with water. maybe this 1 extra liter will funnel into the system, therefore diluting my mixture.

I bush hogged about 1 acre tonight and did notice the radiator, top hose, and block all seemed warmer than what i can remember. Maybe it was just in my head, i dont know.

IF i want to remove the temp idiot light and run a real temp gauge, can i run it off the existing sensor or do i have to replace that too? What gauge would your reccomend?

Thanks again,

Jack

If it's an electrical temp gauge go with new sensor for the gauge. Most have replace the light with a mechanical gauge .

Jack,
I just recently put a temp gauge on my YM2210 and my brother-in-law put one on his YM2000. Down here in South Georgia you can never be too careful with the heat. I used a Stewart Warner model 82210-48 on my YM2210 with a Sunpro CP7574 metric adaptor. The gauge was ordered from NAPA for about $50.00 and the adaptor from Advanced Auto for about $8.00. My brother-in-law ordered his as a kit from Hoye for about $50.00 that I believe includes a Sunpro gauge and the metric adaptor. He did his first and it turned out ok. He ended up with extra capillary tubing coiled under the dash which I did not like. I then set out to find a better gauge with a shorter capillary tubing and that led me to the Stewart Warner with the 48" tubing (most I found had 60" tubing). It fit perfectly. The tubing goes down under the fuel tank, up the left side of the engine, and loops over to the sensor location with no left over tubing to coil and possibly kinking. We punched our holes with a Greenlee hydraulic punch tool with 2" die and then enlarged the hole slightly with an air die grinder. Just be sure to use teflon thread tape on the threads of the sensor mount. I did and it has not leaked a drop. My brother-in-law did not and his leaked slightly until adding the tape.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Thanks.

I just bought a cheap 17$ gauge at lunch today. This forum really is an excellent resource. The directions tell me not to use teflon tape because it will interfere with the reading.... hmm. I will try it w/o the tape and see.

What is the normal operating temp on your machine?

I am told if the end does not sit in the flow of water, it may read hotter. I wonder how much 'hotter' this reading is.

Thanks,

Jack

My YM2210 will idle forever and not get over 120 degrees. When mowing hard, it will climb to about 160 degrees. After mowing for a while and getting the radiator full of debris it will reach 180-200 degrees and I'll stop and blow out the radiator. I've mowed for three hours after a rain when there is nothing floating around to clog the radiator and never got over 160 degrees. I mow with a 4ft Howse mower.

Ok the original question was the coolant quantity. I changed mine this weekend.

After spilling a little, what I got out just filled a gallon container. (128 fluid ounces).

I measured 55 oz of antifreeze and poured it in alternately with an unmeasured quantity of water. Result: about 40% ratio, I estimate. That's close enough. Our min temperature might go down to 22 degrees lowest.
