YM 2310d generator to alternator conversion?

Unfortunately, the tractor is not here right now, but here are a few pics I took when I did it..
http://home.comcast.net/~choffman41/yan1.jpg 1. Started with an old Chevy A/C bracket.
http://home.comcast.net/~choffman41/yan2.jpg 2. Cut the pulley off and tapped it from the back to mount it.
http://home.comcast.net/~choffman41/yan3.jpg 3. You can barely see the idler below the alt. I used the original Yanmar bracket.

I made a nice spacer to replace the rusty nut that is between the alt and adjusting arm. Also, I ran a piece of flat bar from that point to the firewall for better support as it was a little floppy due to engine vibration. It's been working great for 2 years. Also put a voltmeter on the tractor. When first starting, the engine has to rev to about 2000 to excite the alt, then it charges fine at any rpm.

Thanks for those photos and description Choffman. Mine is very similar. I have made up the top and bottom brackets and mounted the alternator. I believe I have cleared the bottom hose by mounting the alternator a little farther away from the engine. I test fitted the side cover and see that it will require spacers of about 1/2" to reinstall with my present setup. I'll post some pictures of my setup too for anybody interested. If this doesn't work out with relation to the hose I guess I'll be looking for that idler pulley.

Ok, got it done. I'm real happy with the way it worked out. I have about 1/4" clearance between belt and the bottom radiator hose which I slid a "guard" over. Also the alternator is about 1/16" from the side cover without any mods to it.

Just wanted to followup on this. We have been planting pumpkins this weekend and ran the tractor quite a bit. Alternator working out great so far. Tractor cranking much quicker after this conversion. No telling how long the old setup has been dying. This is certainly a recommended upgrade.

Thanks for all the help guys. Suggestions and pictures on this thread as well as other threads linked to much appreciated.

JL,

Nice work. How did you wire it all up, since its now one wire.
I'm thinking about the same thing, my 226 has that same hose in the
way as yours did. Nice work around.

Wiring it up was the easy part. Since its a 1 wire alternator, all you have to do is wire the "1 wire" to the battery hot and your in business. I did nothing else to mine. I thought at first my alternator light would come on, but that hasn't been the case.

Its been 6 weeks since I did the conversion and all is well. We have planted a small pumpkin patch and also we have run the finish mower and bush hog probably 10 hrs or so. The one change I have made since that picture was with the small sleeve you can see on the lower hose. I swapped in a stainless sleeve for the black nylon one you can see in the photo for extra protection. The belt occasionally does kiss that area and the nylon was starting to cut. Now the stainless takes those little pecks with no problem.

I've been real happy with the little alternator. It's seems much more powerful than the previous generator type setup. Battery seems hotter all the time and the starter works first time every time since the conversion. Before it was a 50/50 whether or not it was gonna spin on first try.

Sargent: Not to highjack the thread, but I noticed you have a Fram filter in that engine.

I used to hang out on some performance motorcycle forums and there were a lot of race engine builders there. There was a lot of filter testing and dissecting of filters (among other things) and the general consensus was that no one would run a Fram. Their construction techniques are inferior and they are prone to failure. When they "fail" the oil still flows, but it is not filtered.

.02 cents that was not asked for... I hate seeing Fram filters on engines tho.

Noooo , not another Fram sucks and i would not run it thread!

I usually run whatever is cheapest! I've never had any problem with any filter and I have put a couple of million miles on vehicles! I just think changing your oil and filter sooooo much more important than what brand you use.

Now, lets get back to Gen/Alt conversions on Yanmar tractors.:licking:

I'm interested in this conversion. My alt. is toast.

Has anyone found a on-the-shelf mounting kit that would work instead of fabbing up our own mounts?
