hello im new to the forum hopeing to find a little help. i have a 2610 the battery went dead on me and the headlights stopped working. we pulled the battery and found a bubble on the side so we replaced it when we hooked the new one up the alternator started smoking so we immediatly unhooked it from what im reading it looks like i could have a bad regulator or alt. or both what do yall think.

Hello and Welcome dwingert2,

In many cases electrical failures on Yanmar can often be attributed to loose, corroded and poor connections to both the ground and positive wiring. If you dedicate a few hours pulling, cleaning and checking all of the connections (including corrosion inside battery wire insulation) to the block, battery and frame, it very often fixes the problem.

I知 all for keeping my Yanmar tractors as original as the day they were built?ut the alternator upgrade is something I致e been seriously considering because it eliminates costly components in the charging system, produces more than adequate power and only minimally requires some fabrication and a longer fan belt. Just waiting for one of the tractors to fail with the current limiter-voltage regulator before I make the jump.

Good luck.

Mark

thanks for the info mark.

does anyone know what would cause smoke to come out of the alt. when i hooked up the new battery?

well i disconnected all wires and wirewheeled them and whatever they were attached to also disconnected the ground to the frame and cleaned it and the frame the rear flashers were both broken so i completely disconnected them and all wires going to them to rule out them to not be grounding out then i hooked the battery back up and the alternator/generator started smoking again so now im lost.

could the regulator be bad and be backfeeding the battery into the alternator causing it to smoke? or does this just sound like the alternator is bad

also its a 2610 (grey market) the manual we have says it is a negative ground is this correct? we wondered if it was a positive ground and were hooking the battery up backwards the old battery was returned for the core and we cant remember what was +/- on it

I'm sure it is negative ground.

If the alternator starts smoking when you connect the battery, I would agree with you--something is wrong with the regulator, assuming it is wired correctly.

me and my dad have been using the tractor for a while now with no problems until now so it should be wired correct as far as the reg. being bad is there a way to test it?

I think Kenmack has it right, you have a major short in the system.
Maybe a wire finally wore thru the plastic, or a mouse chewed the wires.
Are there any mouse droppings on the engine? look carefully

Do as Mark says, spend an hour tracing all your wires in a well lighted area.
Thats where I would start.
