I'd go to the driveline, unbolt the flanges and remove the driveline. The driveline uses ball bearings on each end to form a CV joint at eather end. What you discribe could be worn or missing drive balls, or a gear problem somewhere in the front end. Drive balls are cheap, I'd look there first, also the easiest tear down. Once the cover is slipped back you will find one end is under spring tension, pry it back with a big screwdriver, remove the drive line. If you don't find a problem with the drive line, leave it off and jack up the front end. Spin each front tire by hand and see if it turns smooth. If it does, most likely the drive line, if it doesn't, time to tear down the front end. Tearing down the front end isn't that hard, but gears aren't cheap, sometimes hard to find. If you have to get in there, replace all of the bearings and seals while you are in there. Don't want to do it twice. Good luck,
