I have a YM 146,great tractor! One problem has cropped up with the Power Shift. It does not engage right away when shifted from 2 to 1(ie,high range to low range) It takes about 2-3 seconds to move forward when downshifted under load. Never a problem upshifting. I have already checked and changed fluid and filter and all the "easy stuff" now I need to tear into it. Any dealers out there had these apart?? Any tendancies? How about sourcing parts?

Try moving the powershift leaver a little past position and then a little before it to check for possible linkage missalinement. A straw I know but I have jerked around more than once by missing the shift stop. for 1ist when down shifting.

I also have a YM146. My power shift is starting to do the same as yours, delayed engagement. Let me know if find a solution are a place to buy cheap parts. I too may have to rebuild the tranny soon.

some say that they have run automatic transmission fluid in these units with some success. I know that they say that the powershift is a clutch pack something like an auto trans in a car ,etc, I can't say for sure cause I haven't taken 1 apart.

Hey Kenmac, Do you know what type of limited success some folks have had with auto transmission fluid in the power shifts. Do you know what type of auto transmission fluid was used i.e. Ford, Chrysler or GM.
I have had a 3110d for less than two years and have noticed a delay of approx two seconds for the last few months. I have changed the fluid and cleaned the strainer without any change. Do you know if anyone has discussed this with the guys at Fredrick’s? Thanks.

Check with tractor ernie . I think he posted that his tractors have atf in them

Change your fluid. This is a common issue when the fluid needs changing. Mine did it too.

He says he changed oil & filter that in his original post .

I assume from your post that it always does this? I had a problem last week going from the second range down to the low range too, but it hasn't happened again or before either. I think somehow I just didn't have it in alignment. For whatever reason it just didn't go smoothly all the way down. I had to go back into neutral and do it again. But if you're thinking of tearing into it, I am assuming it's a constant problem? If you resolve it, please post back to let us know what you find and how you fixed it.

I may have a factory service manual/binder on this model. I'd have to check, but it seems to me I bought one on eBay a few years ago. PM me if interested.

Ernie does use ATF, Mercon if memory serves me correctly. I recently asked Ernie but then didn't need to add any fluid so it isn't promanently stored in memory.

I don't know how well transmission fluid works with the rearend gears ernie says they have had no problems . I think the power shift clutch pack is somewhat like transmission clutches in vehicles with auto. trans.

Thanks for the replies! I am gonna try the Mercon ATF in it. I have also gone through the Power Shift control linkage and tightened up all the possible troublepoints. That has been a huge help already. I found lots of slop in the linkage and cleaned that up. Now when I find time I will do the fluid change to see what that does. I am glad that the fluid doesn't smell "burnt" so I doubt that I have any internal leakage issues.
