Picked up a YM1500 yesterday after doing lots of research and trolling many, many threads on different forums. The fellow had the injectors rebuilt, put in new rings and honed the cylinders, and replaced several worn and broken bits a pieces. The only issue I saw (or heard) was the starter. He thought it was the solenoid, and was able to crank it several times in a row w/o a problem. I had more of an issue and figured it was one of those "got to get the hang of it" things.
Well, today I was able to start it several times, but each time, it sounded like the starter just wasn't engaging correctly. So I pulled the starter and found it to be a 9 tooth starter instead of the correct 11 tooth starter, and the main gear in the engine was chewed up a bit. Needless to say, I won't be starting it again until I get a new correct starter, but am concerned with the main gear in the engine. How much wear is too much wear? It appeared that about 1/16" inch was gone from the gear tooth thickness. Am I OK, or do I need to seriously consider replacing that main gear?
Thanks for any thoughts and observations you could send my way.
