Tstats can just be tested in water. Usually, (at least on autos), the opening temp is stamped, 170-190*. If not open by boiling time, pitch it. Temp gauges and temp lights require different sensors.

I was thinking I hadn't seen that item yet. Then looked at his posting date!!! It's today!! No wonder why I had not seen it. And I was even on their website yesterday!

Happy to report I had a fantastic weekend with my tractor, finally able to relax and enjoy the ride a little and not worry about things so much. Regarding the overheating, I think the biggest thing has been to just slow down, rely on torque and not power, and not overload the mower/pto (RM42, which after all is a finish mower and I'm kind of using it as a brush hog). Coming uphill in Low-3 instead of High-1 has been a game changer, and there's been very little black smoke and no spit from the radiator overflow. Cetane has also been wonderful in getting the engine started like a dream.

There are likely still some issues that I need to sort out but as long as I don't ask too much of the machine for now I've got time to sort it all out. Over the next few weeks I'll check valve clearance, t-stat, and keep looking for signs of a leaking head gasket. But it's a great feeling now that I'm not convinced my engine is about to crack anyday now

Thanks for the all the help, this place is great!

PS have NOT hooked up the temp gauge. Maybe mine will stay in the box too. But I do need to test the temp warning light still! And change that darn hydraulic fluid.

See Winston's post #15 above. That's a simple tractor, there's no thermostat.

It is a good idea to check valve clearance (and head bolt torque while you are in there).
