YM1601D Charging Problems

My YM1601D is not charging the battery. I need a regulator and likely a generator. But before I buy the parts has anyone put an alternator on the YM1601D? If so, which one did you buy and how did you wire it up? Was it a drop in or did you have to make brackets? I know some have done the change over on the larger YM痴, but I cannot find any information on how to do it on the smaller models.

I looked at this thread several times and others threads that I could find. I would like to get some more tips on the best way to do the change over. There got to be others on the site that has done this and have some new tips on how to avoid trouble during the change over.

If you find a better way than what has been posted, let us know. I'd like to modify mine, too. The one I linked was the cleanest I have seen.

yes i know. the first thing is to find one that will fit in the small space on my tractor. it looks like the one wire alternator will be the way to go. that way the battery will stay charged.

The 1610 has a current limiter. It is a snap to change. Every parts source has them in stock. The alternator hardly ever goes out unless the bearings are out and you can hear that.

Current limiter should be the same thing as the voltage regulator? My regulator also has a small black plastic box next to it that is wired into the regulator. My generator seems to be okay, I am going to retest it this weekend to see if I get the correct VAC reading. It is getting to the point that it looks like no one has done this on the 1601D. I might just get a new Yanmar voltage regulator and be done with this problem.

Unless you are sure that the battery is not being charged, there may not be anything wrong with the Dyno or the regulator. The plastic box is for the charging indicator light, which lets you know if the battery stops charging. The trouble is that when the plastic box goes bad it will turn the light on and you think it's not charging when it is charging. Most of the YM1601's and some of the YM1610's have this plastic box. If your battery really isn't charging I would replace the regulator/current limiter, you will also need the little wiring harness to replace the plastic box, it just plugs in. I'm not saying your Dyno is good, but they are as bullet proof as anything on your tractor, we sell maybe 1 or 2 Dyno's per year. The plastic box is available, but I would go the other way.

I put a Denso 1 wire racing type on my 2301. It has worked great so far. It was about $109 for the alt. I had to fab some brackets and add an idler pulley but not a big deal.

took the volt meter out today and here is what i got. from the two wires coming out of the generator at the small plug i got 14 vac at 900 rpms and 30 vac at 2,000 rpms. so this tells me that the generator is good. at the battery i am getting 12.38 volts, no matter the rpms. i am getting the same off the wire coming out of the regulator. so it looks like the easy fix is a new voltage regulator.
