"Carefully using a towel I opened the rad cap and inserted a meat thermometer. The coolant temp was 150 degrees, outside temp about 70 degrees, gauge reading just touching the cold mark. I either have a gauge or sending unit problem.

I don't understand, your thermometer says 150, the gauge is just off the cold mark. where is the problem? If you want it to run hotter for some reason, block off part of the radiator.

It is almost still touching the cold mark. The coolant temp has gone from 70 degrees to 150 degrees and the needle on the gauge has moved about 1/32 inch. One would think that 80 degrees of temp change would move the needle more than that. My 1820 that I had a couple years ago usually registered about the first mark on the gauge once it was worked. Bob

What you say is true, but the gauge does not begin to move until the coolant gets above 140 degrees.
