YM1700 Hard Steering

Mines a Allen head just in the front of it. The only one. Takes an Allen Wrench. If you just loosen up the tank and slide it out of the way your see it.

My plan was to remove it so that I could get oil in it and make that there is no water in it. Is there a way to do that another way? I was looking at the parts diagram and there appears to be a plug on the top of the box. I may be able to get to it by removing the fuel tank.

The plug is on the steering shaft. Look on the fuel tank side under the steering wheel. It's just a rubber plug.

Ok I found the plug it has a wire coming out of it attached to nothing. Tomorrow I will get some gear oil and see if I can put some in it and see what happens. 8w90 oil the correct one?

An Elec. wire.? That's weird. A ground to something apparently. If it's even the correct plug not seeing it and someone has been in the steering. Put a flexible hose on a 2$ Cooking baster then you can add a cleaner to it. Or if you just want to add gear oil that way for now and see what happens. Any 90W gear oil should be fine. And then with the baster if it does come loose you can suck the dirty oil out and fill it again. Won't hurt to do it a few times.

My YM240 has that mysterious wire coming out halfway up the steering column and going nowhere. Maybe they use this column on something with a horn?

Don't be afraid to pull the instrument panel. There's not much under there to disconnect. Pull the warning lights sockets assembly, disconnect the tach cable, take the outer ring off the ignition switch then drop it through (wrapped in plastic so it can't short on something) and similar for the lighting switches.

I predict this will be simpler than the hassle of getting the column reinstalled from below, later.

That's what's nice about these early Yanmars, their simplicity makes them easy to maintain.

They all have that wire! Doesn't show on the Dia. But that's something I would leave alone. If you want to add oil through it then have at it  Were my flash light is pointing I'm on the R. hand side your see the allen wrench plug. I'm sure you have it. That's the Grn. wire it's not a California spec...LOL..

I am going to put some oil in the hole and see what happens. I don’t have anything to lose. Worst case I have to remove the gear box. Maybe tomorrow or this weekend

If you remove the instrument panel disconnect the battery first.
