Hey, I was working a YM2000 and decided to check the charging system. I put a meter across the battery and had only 11.8 volts. Not Charging. I took the alternator to 2 places but they were worthless as they had to have there part number to check it out. OF couse I did not have a number so I left. Anyway what do you guys do to check out a alternator and regulator? The wiring is pretty bad on the tractor as it is. I am just trying to see what I need to buy to get it up to speed.
thanks again.

Take to an old fashion alternator shop. They can check. These auto zones & such can't tell you anything unless it's on their computer.

I got a Datsun 510 alternator and regulator and put on mine. It's been working great for about 2 years, at a cost of around 38.00 for both if I remember right.

Do a search in this forum and you'll find the details.

ah ha. I thought a Datsun would work. I read it somewhere but could not remember. I wonder if you told the AutoDuds that they could check it under a Datsun 510 that they could check it? I was going to a old place next week that rebuilds them and can also check them.
thanks

I'm certain the $65 replacement regulator for YM2000 tests identical to '72 Datsun 510. BTDT. I had already bought the regulator by mailorder so I didn't return it. I was tempted, but that dealer has always provided excellent service so I figured wasn't fair to return it.

I expect the alternator would test ok (or bad) if you told AutoZone it came off a 72 Datsun. Be aware the alternator Hitachi provided for YM2000 is only 15 amp while the one they provided to Datsun was 35 amp, so that might make a difference in the test result.

Eric, I have a question: does YM2210 use the same alternator and regulator as YM2000? Thanks!

I don't think the 2000 has the same as the 2210, the connectors are a little different on the back, just not sure but would say no..
I went to autozone and thought it bad but the guy just punched in some sort of numbers as a guess. I went back to Napa armed with the thoughts of a datsun 510 and even had the older guy help me. He checked many manuals and we tried to test it under something close and it failed. I was about to order a 510 altrernator but the guy said he would have to order it.
SO i went to a local old school shop that knew how to check with a volt meter! And low in behold it was good! the bearing sounded a little bad so for $40 bucks he would go thru it and fix that and double check it all out.
I watched him check it, He spun it on a machine and would get 11.5 to 12 volts with just checking the + and - but if you connected (not sure which one) one of the 2 plugins to the + it would go to full charge, 15volts in my case! SO good. he has my unit now and I will bring the regulator to him next. The wiring is so rigged I have to check them both as they could be good or not.
will let everyone know when i do.

Well I got the alternator back and ended up buying a voltage regulator for $28 bucks. Pretty cheap. The place that rebuilt my Alternator could not test my old voltage regulator due to there machine being down. It probabaly was bad. Anyway I put them back on the tractor and it is now charging! hurray! Now the wiring is still a issue. I am having to get a new set of dash lights and turn signal switch, I might just go for a new starter switch as the one on it is the generatic crappy one. After looking over the wiring schematics for the ym2000 it looks really easy to work on. Just need more time.

I knew if you took it to an old fashion atl shop they could test it . Auto Zones & the like If it ain't in the computer we don't know what to do.I remember when I was a teen growing up working on my cars. I could walk into a family owned auto parts store & tell the guy ( that had worked the counter all his life) that I needed plugs , dist. cap, rotor ,points & condenser for xyz auto & he didn't have to look in a book. He just went to the shelf & picked up all the parts & asked If I needed anything else. AH, the good ol days sure are missed ( atleast by me)

it's certainly different today. But I'm not convinced the old days were better. The only thing in that list that my Subaru has needed in 9.5 years, 88k miles is plugs, once. I don't know what's under its hood since I never needed to look.

'Back in the day', I used to teach automechanics.

I was refering to mainly the folkes behind the counter. Now days you have to tell them what color it is , How many doors it has, 2wd or 4wd etc, etc,. & & if the engine wasn't the one that came in the car . you can forget it. Example>>>Had a drag car once 440ci in a dodge dart. try to buy a freeze plug for a 440 ci engine for a 1969 dodge dart. doesn't matter all 440 freeze plugs are the same . in their computer A 440 ci in a 1969 dodge dart don't exist
