I'm looking at a YM2210 for possible purchase. The guy has had it for approx. 8-9 years and has out grown it. My question: Are there any specific problems or potential problems I should look for other than the obvious. I work with the owner and I trust him. I know to check the lift for leak-down and to run it through all the gears under a load. He will let me run it in is pasture with a mower for probably as long as I want. He also has a tiller he said we could run. Is there any way to judge the compression without pulling an injector and using a gauge? The hour gauge reads approx 550 hrs. Is it a safe bet it has about 1550 hrs. He says he has put approx. 250 hrs on it. It already had a clutch safety switch when he bought it. I'm going to see it on 10/30 for the first time. The photos he emailed look great (no obvious leaks, good paint and tires). My brother-in-law got a YM2000 about a month ago and I was not impressed until I saw it working. Now I have the Yanmar fever. He got his from a "dealer" and it looks new. I consider this YM2210 a better bet because I know 8-9 mores years of its history than he does on the YM2000. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Welcome Ed,
The YM2210 is a good choice. One way to judge the compression is to insist on a cold start when you go see it. With the throttle pushed forward, Pull the compression release and turn the engine over until the oil pressure light goes off. Then with the compression release still pulled out, pull the throttle all the way back and hit the starter again. While the engine is spinning push the compression release back in. The faster the engine starts, the better your compression. Mine is a YM2000B with a little over 550 hours on it and it pops usually on the secord or third revolution after pushing the compression release back in.

Good Luck,
Bruce

Ed, I think you are probably right about the 1550 hours.

And the tests you describe are better than most people are going to get at a dealership, unless the dealer let's them take it home.

You could look at the holes on the 3 point hitch to see how worn they are, which might give an indication of use.

I'm just curious, What is his asking price?

How do you determine wear at the lift arm holes? I am just curious, as that is not something we have ever looked at. I have seen tractors plumb wore out with thousands of hours but no noticeable deformity in the eye in the lift arm. Also, lift arms are never attached to the tractor in the container (at least not what we get), so it is close to random whether those are the lift arms that were with the tractor most of it's life.

He has the tractor, 5 ft mower, box blade, roto-tiller, and a lift pole. He is asking $5200 for everything. He told me he put it in the local paper within the past two months and received NO calls on it. He also put up a flyer at work and nobody has called. In this neck of the woods, if it's not green most people are not interested. I think the odds are in my favor that I can get it for closer to $4000. I have printed out several adds that sell YM2210's "newly reconditioned" with a 90 day warranty for as low as $3700. I'll show those to him and see what happens.

Is the YM2210 a 2 or 3 cylinder engine? Other than the power shift transmission and a few more horsepower, what are the differences between a YM2000 and a YM2210? Sorry for so many questions. Thanks!!

one thing ed is on the 2210 the decompression lever turns to the left and then back right. Some units they pull out. try turning it.
