I have a question about the compression release. Is it only used for cold weather starting? Or do you use it all the time? I use it all the time figuring it is easier on the starter. Am I doing it right? Thank you for any help you can give me.

The only place I find the compression release mentioned in my manual is in the section on cold weather starting. However there are two camps on that question. One says "cold weather", the other says "all the time". I've tried it both ways during warm weather but my 2220 starts so easily that I put more wear on the starter spinning it up with the compression released than I do starting it from scratch.

The most logical argument I've heard in favor of using the comp. release in all starts doesn't have anything to do with starter wear. The argument is that using it gets the oil pressure up and flowing before compression and combustion pressures are applied to the various bearing surfaces thereby reducing wear on the engine. Sounds reasonable but I cannot testify either way as to any long term significant effects.

FWIW, I'd say do whichever gives you the warmest fuzzies.

While I would be of the opinion that it is primarily for cold weather starting there is one advantage to using it all the time and that is that if there perchance is oil or water on top of the piston it will push it out and not have the potential for piston/rod damage from trying to compress the incompressible.

It does take longer for the spin up to oil pressure than it normally takes for my engine to start without using the release. More starter wear vs more engine wear? I do not know--it is a lot lighter load without compression and good oil clings to the bearing surfaces quite well.

Let every man be convinced in his own mind I say.

I use mine all the time. Adds maybe ten seconds of extra starter wear for the oil light to go out.

I didn't think about that, but that is a much better reason to use it all the time since my tractor doesn't have the oppurtunity of being garaged. I should have my garage up in a couple of months then it will be a different story. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Another reason to use it all the time is get the oil pressure up before you start the engine. This will increase the life of your engine. Shut ur fuel off, open your comp release and operate your starter for about 9 seconds. Wait one minute and turn your starter again this time watching your oil pressure light if it goes out before another 9 secs open a little fuel and pop that release...she will fire right up and have lubercation......geniuous....

You know, I've tried doing something like that, but as I recall, all the warning lights on my machine go out as soon as the key is turned to the start position. I guess some machines are wired differently than others.

I think that if this was the case, all engines would have the compression release. I've owned and driven a lot of farm tractors and the Yanmar is the first I've seen with it,

I have added gauges to my yanmar. The oil pressure is above 30 psi in about 5 to 6 seconds of cranking before releasing the compression release.

I strongly believe that this practice adds greatly to improved bearing life.
