The gauges are proof for sure. I also believe that the pressures and drag exerted by a diesel engine to a starter are far more damaging then to cycle the starter freely when the decompression is used.

this makes sense the diesel engines in locomotives basically have vents on them to open and cycle the engine a few times before starting to push any moisture out of them if not done over time will blow head gaskets. ive seen this happen.(according to the mech that repaired the motor that was the reason atleast) here in louisiana the humidity is pretty high so i can see this being worth while to save wear and tear on the motor but at the same time like said before there are plenty of diesel motors in other equipment and vehicles that dont have this option that last a long time.
