looks like a little air in the right front tire is also in order !!!!!! Just bustin ya chops there jb !!!!!!

njoy from CT

That is the sad pic of the Tractor ad in craigslist, It has a new tire now, and some new hydraulic lines, box blade and a solar charger to keep the battery topped up. But I got it for $1400 with a pair of Turf tires as well. :p

Time for some new Pics as it starts to look more and more like a good tractor.

Interestingly, the cylinder seals are becoming less leaky, perhaps the new more viscous hydraulic oil and some use is rehydrating the seals and making them tighter.

I will drain the transmission and replace that fluid.
I wonder how it can get water into it?
Its pretty dry in CA, and I don't think the YM240's have ever been in a rice paddy since they are US models.

Water in the transmissions of old tractors is very common. I know souther cal is dry and dosent get the rain we get here but when the fluid probably hasent been changed in 10 years think of all the rain storms that you have had in that time and all that rain that runs down the shifter or sits on the very top of the boot a fraction of that water leaks past the old hard rubber cracked boot each time.

I'll just piggy-back onto what others have already said: In my experience, there may tend to be MORE issues with water intruding into engines, transmissions, reservoirs etc in this area than others, precisely because we DON'T get much precipitation. It isn't something we normally pay attention to managing, so it's easy to get caught with equipment uncovered or unprepared for rain. Additionally, the high ozone, strong sun, and the tendency to leave things out to exposure combine to quickly degrade even high-quality rubber or plastic seals compared to other locations, which makes water intrusion much easier. It doesn't take much water at all to cause the milky emulsion, and once it's in, the transmission or hydraulic reservoir isn't going to get hot enough to boil it out; they aren't vented with that intent anyway, so the moisture will just recondense later even if it does come out of emulsion. This is part of the reason ongoing replacement of the fluid is essential.

I have had my tractor for 14 years and the only time it has ever gotten wet was with my butt in the seat, heeded for the barn at breakneck speed, (7-8mph).

I will add that I purchased about two years ago from Fredericks a new shift boot. It is already cracked. My tractor is under a covered porch and is protected from the sun. Anyone have a more permanent solution for the shift boot?

Comments re the shifter boot - my YM240 looks like it was left outdoors for years and the shifter boot is original so far as I can see. Its still flawless; flexible and seals well. I didn't find any water in the transmission when I did a long-overdue replacement of the fluid in 2003 or at last year's change.

But I don't know if ordering a replacement genuine US-Yanmar boot would help. I bought a genuine clutch safety switch and its little boot cracked immediately. I was a little pissed that the Authorized Yanmar Parts Dealer replied that it wasn't returnable, even though it obviously didn't meet specifications.
