I shot a 44 automag once, not nearly the recoil, also had cutts compensator. The 44 mag revolvers need a shoulder stock though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you want to see something funny...that would be my wife (125 lbs soaking wet) shooting the .44 Mag. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Her stance reminds me of Barney Fife, but she has a twinkle in her eye when she's done shooting.

What a gal.

That's why we practise. Plus target shooting is fun and gratifying.

At home, all pistols are loaded along with 12 guage pump. 3 1/2" mag turkey load w/ IC choke. I don't miss. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hunting rifles are unloaded and locked up, the scopes are too expensive to leave lying around.

And please don't bother replying that loaded guns are un-safe...I understand the issue at hand, and am responsible.

As for the mega-calibers go, a 357 is plenty for me, and can always be shot w/ 38s. I'd hate to be a peace officer and have to go up against druggies wielding Mac 10s UZIs, etc. Glad my job description doesn't include being shot at.

Well, they are! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif But an unloaded one won't do you much good. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I grew up in a house where we knew the guns were loaded, so I've never lived in a house without loaded guns available. I don't recommend to others, but I've always done it.

Usually if you need a gun, you need it right now. Under the seat, in the trunk or unloaded pretty much make it useless.
All guns should be handled as if they are loaded and never ever point one at something you don't want to blow up.

I hate to be the one who argues but.....It is all about stopping power for home defense. .22's do kill but maybe not stop a methed out burglar with an Uzi in hand. You got to end it right now. This means use a weopon with stopping power. They make low penetrating rounds for home defense. They are like shot bonded together so they hit with knock down stopping force but will breakup in drywall. I forget what they are called. Other than that your best round is a hollow point because they spread out stop a man now...both of these are actually less leathal than a solid slug but they stop the aggressor.. This way maybe the dude won,t die but is stopped from spraying your family with an Uzi.... There is a formula for figuring stopping power but I don't remember it. Just about any .44 mag round would stop anything short of an elephant it hit sqaure.... You have to be able to hit what you shoot. You may need to shoot again... So a .44 mag may not be as effective as a .357 in the real world...I think most intruders would leave if they heard any shot.. If I am shooting at an intruder in my home I want the intruder incapacitated right now... If I get into a gun fight in my home I want enough bang to cause confusion etc..... I therefore think that it is better to have as much caliber and power as you can handle.... I have a basic colt trooper .357. I can hit you with it. If it has the correct round you aint shooting back.....If I hit you with a .22 you may be pretty dangerous for sometime unless you are a squirel.....

That said, I agree with this thread. There are a lot of people out there who dont know how far a bullet will travel and how far out it can be effective. And a lot of them are guys who should know.

I brought this up about 2 years ago on a gun board that I go to, when a woman was killed in her house during hunting season. A guy shot at a deer and the bullet traveled through the woods, across a field, through sideing and sheet rock hit her in the throat and killed her. To me it was very interesting to see the responses. Most of the varmint hunters had a good grasp on the idea, the strict deer hunters were on and off. I think it comes more from hitting multiple targets at varied ranges out to 500 yards and snap shooting a deer at 35 once a year.

Snipers in Viet Nam used 30-06's that started life as civilian rifles and were accuratized as best as they could. (Win mod 70's and Rem 700's and others) They normaly sighted in at 700, yes that is 7 hundred yards. I believe that the longest 30 caliber confirmed hit was at 1200 yards (Carlos Hathcock). Camp Perry has shoots every year where people shoot 1000 yards. The 03 Springfield for which the 30-06 cartridge is named from has a ladder sight that is graduated out to 2800 yards for shooting at massed troops. A 45 ACP can hit targets at 100 yards offhand, a 357 Magnum can bounce a coffee can at that same range.

Point is, when you are attempting to hit something at 25 - 100 - 1200 - or 2800 yards or not, the bullet CAN and WILL do what it is designed to do. And it will do it at that range. It is worth thinking about when you are building your backstop or hunting.

Just because the bullets always fall short of Walker, Texas Ranger, doesnt mean you have his luck. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Ya seen his wife? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Any (.)more(.) questions? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

About three weeks ago my stepsons first cousin and a buddy were in his cousins apartment playing with a loaded gun after a few beers. My son sold them the gun so i don't know if they weren't familiar with it or not. The cousin had the gun in his hand supposedly showing the friend how to use it when it went off and shot the friend in the chest. He died in the cousins arms as paramedics got there. 22 years old...what a shame.

are you certain that a hollow point is less lethal than a solid slug and that a solid slug does more damage than hollow points?

Bird, That's the truth. When we were "big enough to walk" granddad took all us grandkids under his wing about firearms. Yes, they are always loaded! That's the problem about people accidently shooting each other, they aren't properly trained when young.

Isucrazy, thanks for the link ( theboxotruth)! That's too cool. Makes me miss being able to shoot right at the house (before neighbors).
