Thx for that very comprehensive explaination TJ, appreciate that.
C140, Sounds like where ever this "spring" is I need to drop the BH off? It does not sound too difficult.
As I stated, I am a total newbie, can someone let me know what IIRC means?
thanks guys

HI Guys-
New to the Hydrological mechanics world for the most part.
I hear you guys talking about adding "shims" to increase hydro pressure int he system.
Could somebody explain more detailed (hopefully a pic but I know that's asking a lot, but sure would be nice If I knew which part to add this shim too).
I bought a used bx last year and I thought I should be able to do a little more with the FEL with the forks on it.
It's outta warranty so...

I hate to be crass, but, if you can afford a tractor and want to do your own maintenance and repair work, get the WSM. Costs less than $100. It is a copyrighted document available through any K dealer. It has saved me a lot of money and scratching around for info that is clear in the WSM. We all here want to be helpful. Once were all seeing the issue the same and use standard terminology we can then enhance the issue with personal experience when the book is not clear or does not cover the subject. Maybe so; information can often backfire. Get the manual and we can all be be more helpful. When posting questions use several legible pictures.

Now; after the Rant; The shims are thin discs of metal in several thicknesses. They increase the tension on the spring loaded ball valve. Some tractors have an adjustment screw to do the same thing. K probably uses the shims to support their dealer shops, as casual mechanics will back off when they have to disassemble stuff they do not understand. The shims are not a high use item so dealers usually have to order them. They are cheap. Cost more to ship than the product costs. Pull the cap, the shims are right under the cap. You cannot get to it with the BH on. The manual lists the thickness and what each MM added increases pressure to. W/O a gauge you are shooting in the dark as you do not know where you are starting from.

Working on your BX you will need both metric and SAE wrenches as they use both. Running gear seems to be metric, frame/body SAE. Usually you can find a metric size that work the SAE sizes, especially if you have them in 1 mm increments. I use all 6 point sockets to avoid rounding.

On the BX if you simply tighten the bolt does the pressure increase. I know on my old machine just tightening everything up caused a 100 PSI increase in pressure.
Thought it was odd from what i read before?

There is no adjusting screw (bolt) on a BX, that is what the shims accomplish.

One thing to think about, if you get the relief valve set too high what is the weakest link in the system? Answer, the hydraulic pump housing. If the relief valve is set to high or malfunctions then the pressure from the pump has no where to go when you pull one of the levers the pressure will just keep building till the pump housing cracks. The pumps are positive displacement meaning if it is turning it is pumping oil, which normally circulates back to the reservoir, but if the open center control valves are closed directing oil to one of the cylinders, the oil doesn't recirculate till the relief opens. If the relief doesn't open, KABOOM. This happened to my brother in law on a Yanmar 4220 that I sold him. The relief valve froze up and every thing worked ok till he tried to raise the FEL then the pump housing cracked. A used pump from Howe tractor was over $500.

Looks like bxpanded's kit comes with a guage, shims, instructions.

Hydraulic Pressure Tester

Yea it does, that is what I bought.

Yea you can source the parts and get it all cheaper, but like I have said before I am lazy....one click and I had everything.

Not sure lazy is the right word, just that there are other things I would rather do with my time then look up parts....if someone already did all that leg work I don't mind giving someone a little extra $$ for that work, provided I can trust who did that leg work. With BXpanded I do trust that they are going to supply me with correct and quality parts.
