You guys weren\'t fibbin\' about toothbars!

Got my new toothbar from Carver Equipment today. After roundin' up a new 3/4" drill bit (man, them is some expensive holes), got it mounted and everyone who has extolled the virtues of a toothbar were right. Popped some 4-5" trees right out of the ground (ground is kinda soggy, so that helps some). Works great for slippin' under the down trees so you can move 'em around. Thanks to everyone who said how great these things are. Sure should make life easier./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: You guys weren\'t fibbin\' about toothbars!

Also, took a trip yesterday to a used equipment place. Ordered one of the M-19 Leinbach (sp?) plows. It should be here next week. While I was lookin' around, I found something that I thought I should have. I don't know what the official name is, but we just used to call 'em a spring-tooth. Talked him down to $300.00 for it. Not sure what I'll end up usin' it for, but for that price I figure it can sit until I think of something. Wrong color though. Got to get out the green or yellow paint.

Now that you have a teeth, you will use them alot. They are worth money!
The spring tooth you refered to for $300. You should of said something. I buy wide units and cut them down into smaller widths for your little tractors to pull. I add a 3 point hitch that is quick hicth compatable and new paint, I sell them at a local auction, they go for $150 to $200 for a 6' model. I use mine alot.

Toothbars mounting question

CVHoss, My toothbar also arrived from Carver's today. I have a mounting question for you or anyone else. When I put it on the loader, if the loader cutting edge is all the way into the slots on the teeth then the wide flat plate that connects the teeth is about a half inch above the bottom of the bucket. If it is mounted so the flat plate is flush with the bucket bottom then the cutting edge is not in the tooth slot. It would take considerable grinding or adding material to both fit the slots and be flush with the bucket bottom. Did you have this type of fit and what did you do?

Thanks,

Andy

Re: Toothbars mounting question

Andy,
Sorry, but I can't help you. Mine fit like a glove. Only thing was it was about 1/4" short between the walls of the bucket. I just bought a couple of extra 3/4" flat washers to fill up the space. Hope you get everything worked out.

Re: You guys weren\'t fibbin\' about toothbars!

The spring tooth that you bought is actually a field cultivator. We have always called them a garden tiller. Everyone here is always talking about rotary tillers, we don’t have very many here. Everyone here uses a field cultivator. Hoss they really do a good job and you can cover a lot of ground very fast. I always use one after using my moldboard plow. By doing it that way I can get my garden real soft and loose about a foot deep with out any clumps. $300 for a new one, wow. That was a very good price.

Re: You guys weren\'t fibbin\' about toothbars!

I just looked at Carver's site and could not find a price on the tooth bar. What are they running.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: You guys weren\'t fibbin\' about toothbars!

To echo JerryG, There are alot of rear, 3 point, row crop field cultivators out there since herbicides have rendered them obsolete. I picked up a 6 row Oliver for $75, cut 18" off each end, replaced the "sweep" type shovel points with chisel points, removed 2 of the tine assemblys and moved the rest closer together and then replaced the 3 point pins with a set of category 1's. It's way over built and heavy, I've got extra parts, the chisel points are readily available and cheap (good ole' Fleet Farm) and I've got ~ $110 in the whole thing. Look for one with a large single square beam( mines has about a 4-5" square box beam) The Oliver has double spring tooth tines and function as a chisel plow for deep tilling. You see these at auction or sitting in the back of dealers lots. Weld a tongue on it and use a drop seeder behind it for large lawn areas.

Re: Toothbars mounting question

In my experience, profiles of the bucket lip differ, so your toothbar may not work. One size does NOT fit all.

I have a CAL 4-in-1 bucket. My dealer sold me a Woods toothbar, which in addition to being about 1" too narrow, had the same problem as you are having with yours. The profile of the lip just didn't match the profile of the notch in the toothbar. I took it back and had him order one from CAL. Fits like a glove.
