These are the stories I heard.
The first property my parents had didn't come with a tractor.
He pulled the disc to work up the ground with his pickup.
He'd have to stop often to let it cool off.
It wasn't geared for that kind of work and would overheat pretty quick.
His first tractor was a John Deere on steel wheels.
You started it spinning the large flywheel on the side and switched to kerosine.
Once she started running good you turned her over to diesel.
Just a drawbar, with your a-s hanging out over the implement.
You better not fall off.
Now the modern tractors rival some of the crap out of NASA.
