Yep. And after a few winters of wet boots with road salt they would rust shut and you'd replace them.

When he was in college my brother bought a station wagon to put the engine in his Mustang. He also took the floor switch out of the parts car, and used it as a floor mounted switch
for his wipers.

Need I tell you that he was going to school to be an engineer?

Of course. My first car had headlights lights with bulbs in them (not sealed beams), plate glass (not safety glass) and the starter was on the floor. It had a 2-50 AC (2 windows and 50 mph).

Going up a long hill in a downpour could be challenging.

There was no almost about it, especially going uphill in snow storm.

Some of my cars have had a switch added in that location, but momentary contact, for line locks.

My dad used one of those old dimmer switches to connect the basement stairway lights back in the early 60's. He installed it in the floor at the top of the stairs so you could step on it when you were carrying a load of firewood down to the basement. It was still working when they sold the farm.
