You Know You Are Old When

40 footer was just absolutely insane to lift into place. Needed two people, every time I wanted to move it

I would then have to find someone to go up it for me. 25 or so years ago I fell while climbing onto a 2nd story roof... Landed on the shed roof, slid down it headfirst and landed on the frozen ground. Got up and said "Holy ****!! I'm alive!"
Ever since then I haven't liked heights.

At our home place farm we had a very old, in good shape 40 foot wooden extension ladder, the base widened out to about 3 feet , it must of weighed 200 lb.
I only seen my dad use that once or twice, it took three men and two boys to move that thing around

YKYO when your mind says "Go for it" and your body is saying "you'll be sorry".

Then, if you are dumb enough to go for it, your body will punish you severely and it will last for days.

I have learned now, but sometimes forgot that I can't do the things I used to so. About 15 years ago when I was 50 I was out in the woods and had to cross a small brook, about 8-10 feet across with a nice high bank on my side. I got a running start, jumped, and thought "Oh Rats, I'm not 20 anymore." I came down in knee deep water, getting wetter than if I had just waded it. Not long before that I was going into a store which had a jersey barrier to separate cars from people entering the store. I got a running jump intending to clear it but again was in midair when I thought "I'm not 20 anymore!". Rather than clearing the barrier I decided to land on it briefly to slow myself down.

If I tried that now I'd hit my knees and fall on my face.

50 does seem to be about the age when most just start realizing they can't do everything they used to do.

Maybe "realizing" is the wrong word, as it implies self-awareness. Let's say "painfully learning".

I like to say 'reminded' I'm not 20 anymore because to be honest, I know dam well - Case in point.
I got my eyes fixed. Cataracts removed distance lenses installed. Had my now needed cheaters on and thought to run a couple of things up the conc stirs to the barn.
Well I missed the top step, by that much, and since I had momentum and stuff in both hands I thought I would just tuck and roll. I should know better, I'm 71 next month... I sure hurt my shoulder when my full weight landed on it.

I don't know if this qualifies as "irony", but I broke my shoulder and three ribs doing exactly the same thing... when I was in my mid-20's.

Tuck and roll apparently works better on flat ground, than on staircases.
