You Know You Are Old When

I think he did mean football, not soccer. My English PE coach was really pissed that I refused to play rugby. I'd heard so much about "old football injuries" that I decided I wasn't going to play a ruffians game and suffer from injuries later in life. I injured my back from high jumping instead.

Last night I saw one of my favorite movies when I was much younger on TV (haven't seen the movie in what seems like forever).

"Where Eagles Dare" starting Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.

For the first time in my life, I realized that Richard Burton, playing Major John Smith had kind of a major flaw in the whole movie.

I'm finding it hard to believe that when Major John Smith talks in English with a British accent behind enemy lines, and the entire German Army speaks english, I'm just amazed that I never picked up on it before when I use to watch it with my dad LOL

Next, you’re going to be asking why Russian submarine captains have Scottish accents! :p

In the latter case, the director decided it would be too distracting to have Connery fake a Russian accent, so they just let him speak normally. Maybe the same decision was made in Where Eagles Dare?

It's always a fine line to walk when dealing with foreign languages in film.
I thought they threaded the needle fairly well in "The Enemy Below". Mostly in English, but with real German actors with the right accents, and they would throw in German words from time to time. Still no subtitles needed.

Don't forget the comb that was back there.
Could be dangerous if your comb was a rake… also doubled as a weapon in Oakland High school days.

I think in the old days, they just didn't really care LOL. That said, I guess subtitles have been out since silent films?

I thought Das Boot was a great film for it's time when it came out due to the realism (1981), but done in German with english subtitles.

People tend to not think how small WW2 subs were

I had been though the WW2 German sub at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago several times, first time as a kid. It gives me chills to to this day thinking of what it was like being under water in that sardine can, much less having someone throwing explosives at ya.

Same here, I toured one in Cleveland. I didn't know I had claustrophobia, we're standing in the Sub while the guy is talking on and on. I could see the sunlight past him, my heart starting pounding, breathing picked up and I wanted to climb over the top of those people to get the h*ll out of there.

It was interesting to see how small it was, the bunks and sinks. I guess that's why Sub service is voluntary.

Remember melting records so they went ripply all around and then making art creations out of them.
One of the kids in art class made an ash tray for his father out one of these warped records.
I guess the ciggy ash was hot enough that it started the ash tray on fire overnight. Burned their house down.
They were lucky to get away without serious injury.
With ironic twist the record was "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash
