You Know You Are Old When

Funny enough, the term "Honky" has changed over the years, but not the derogative term for black people. Go figure...
Never knew it was anything but a derogatory term.

Could be a regionalism. Interpretation of "bubba", "redneck" or "yankee" varies by region.

Always thought it could be pertaining to white people in todays times, but never in my life thought of it as an alternative for redneck or yankee LOL

When I grew up in Eastern PA in the 50’s, there were a lot of Hungarians (and Polachs like me and Italians, and Slavs and other Eastern Europeans). The Hungarians were referred to as Hunky’s and it was not considered to be derogatory.

Of course the Italians were WOPS (without papers) and other ethnics had their own term.

Back then just about anyone could enter the US without papers. It’s what made this country great.

Honestly, I could have remembered it wrong from my dad and it could have been Hunky and not Honkey.

I know my dad was Lithuanian and my mom Ukrainian. Both my mom and dad were not offended by the term in the least the way they talked about it.

Mom from St Clair and dad from New Philly, coal mining region. Place where you have a town of 4,000 people (St. Clair) and you literally had 45 churches and 40 bars in town LOL.

Honestly, and I don't mean this in a bad way, I took my son up to Indiantown Gap to visit my dad and my uncles recently, and eastern Pa is just too depressing for myself.

My mom is old-school Philly, born and raised. If you ask her what “Hunky” means, she’s going to name Tom Selleck as Magnum PI, and Honky is any white guy in a black neighborhood.

The version used around here is "hunky" Some around here won't let an ethnic entrepreneur use the name "Hunky Bill"s" for his restaurant or food stand at our local fair.
